A secure alternative to using Slack and Teams
Overall Satisfaction with Mattermost
Our organization is trying to achieve SOC 2 compliance right now. Many of our clients are government contractors, so it is imperative that passwords and government information is not leaked. We tested it with just a handful of employees at first to see how easy it would be to deploy on-prem. The main idea was to have a communication platform that is more secure to achieve compliance.
Pros
- It can be deployed to a secure on-prem Linux Server
- It meets many of the checklists for Cybersecurity Insurance
- The ease of use for new users is good. The layout is self-explanatory
Cons
- There is no free version to at least try out the service
- The cost is much higher than using the Microsoft equivalent
- We could not find a way to communicate over video using the platform
- The application provided a good talking point when trying to attract new clients.
- We were able to easily check off compliance checkboxes while using it.
- The ROI was not there for us yet. We do not have enough customers that are government contractors to justify spending close to ten dollars per user at this time.
Much more expensive than most chat applications but you have more control over things by self-hosting. Your security team will be able to design a very secure place to store all your code, passwords, and internal details, but most companies will not require this. It would be better if you could try a free version at first. We had to pay to try the product.
