Avalara product review
Overall Satisfaction with Avalara
My company has three separate unique divisions, online retail, national rental, and a marketplace facilitator. The obvious problems we faced were sales tax nexus threshold tracking, calculating the correct sales tax rates, exemption certificate management, as well as managing and reporting on things like the CO retail delivery fee and the Illinois rental tax. Avalara has products to monitor and track state by state sales and compare it to each state's individual nexus thresholds, they are crucial in accurately calculating sales tax on each customer's invoice based on the customer's shipping address. Avalara also has software to manage customer and vendor exemption certificates with automated processing features to help streamline our internal processes.
Pros
- Accurately calculate and apply sales tax rates
- Avalara is a "total solution" that covers all areas of transactional tax.
- Managing the software is easy and intuitive.
Cons
- It would be if sales tax reports were available to reflect state upload templates
- We process millions of invoices per year so calculating sales tax would be impossible without Avalara.
- We are more likely to be compliant in miscellaneous areas like state delivery fees because Avalara makes it easy.
- We receive over 100 exemption certificates every day. Without Avalara's software we would require at least 2 additional individuals to manage just exemption certificates.
Setting up a state in Vertex was not intuitive or user friendly. The system itself was clunky. Trying to set up a custom tax override was a nightmare. Whereas any of these tasks are very simple with Avalara. Setting up a state is as simple as checking a box and entering a start date. Custom tax overrides are easy to initiate and the system is very user friendly.
