Important tool for converged networks.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We need to make the quality-of-service parameters we set on our networking equipment are indeed being realized so that the voice communications which are vital to the business sound crystal clear. Before we implemented this module from Solarwinds, we were often "flying blind" when our employees or customers complained of poor voice quality. Now we can head off problems before they get worse and shorten the duration of ones we don't catch beforehand.

Pros

  • Display expected quality-of-service versus actual results in real-time.
  • Help us dig into issues quickly and thoroughly.
  • Provides an early warning when thresholds are close to being exceeded.

Cons

  • It could integrate easier with our ITSM and alerting system - ServiceNow.
  • The user interface is a little different than other Solarwinds modules.
  • For this specific functionality the price seems a little high.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is best suited for managing and monitoring homogenous networks where the design is similar across the board. The most obvious use case is to make sure the correct network quality of service is being maintained to ensure voice call quality in a converged networked. It would be less suited/necessary if the voice and data networks were segmented from each other.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Proactive WAN and VoIP monitoring tools that can help with troubleshooting. Review QOS, including jitter, latency, packet loss, and MOS. Troubleshoot VOIP call performance and correlate call issues.

Pros

  • Quality of service monitoring.
  • IP SLA Analysis.

Cons

  • Ring groups should be included.
  • Call recording feature is missing.

Likelihood to Recommend

VNQM helps network engineers to see network Voice quality issues from the end user perspective and thus be more proactive and engage voice teams accordingly.
The impact on SolarWinds performance due to polling numerous nodes & large number of IPSLA operations can be difficult to predict. It slows down the entire server and its functionality.

VNQM provides a unique perspective to network monitoring.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

SolarWinds VoIP and Network Quality Manager (VNQM) is used primarily by our voice team, but also on occasion by the network engineers. The tool is somewhat unique in the SolarWinds Orion suite in that it provides some WAN performance and quality data that is not available from other monitoring applications. That means that the data provided by VNQM provides a proactive perspective that can be missing in some cases.

Pros

  • It provides Call Manager statistics from either Cisco or Avaya devices.
  • In addition to the VoIP data, the tool also allows one to monitor ten other SLA operation types that provide WAN connectivity and quality data as well as infrastructure and application quality data.
  • VNQM has the ability to search CDR/CMR records.
  • VoIP gateway and infrastructure devices can also be monitored with VNQM.

Cons

  • The impact on SolarWinds performance itself of configuring a large number of IPSLA operations for monitoring can be difficult to predict. It would be beneficial to have some tools that could warn or predict the results of doing so.
  • Additional background information on the use case for each SLA operation type would be helpful to the user who may not be an expert in the field. The Server and Application Monitor product provides this benefit for application component monitoring.
  • The tool should be engineered to allow repeated SLA node discovery for any and all nodes in the Orion Platform database.

Likelihood to Recommend

This tool is well suited to a network environment consisting of multiple sites as long as those sites have a SLA-capable Cisco router. This allows the network engineer to essentially test any call path or meshing of call paths with synthetic VoIP operations. Additionally, since the SLA operations are "point-to-point" rather than being bound only to a central SolarWinds polling server, the data metrics provide a more complete and accurate picture of WAN performance.
