Categories & Use Cases

Forget Snipping Tool, Snagit is your go to image capture/editor!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Snagit is a great photo capture tool. It allows users to quickly grab clips during presentations, videos, documents, and other resources to quickly modify into supporting clip art for documentation. This is my default snipping tool/screen capture utility for its quick capabilities for screen capturing full screen, scrolling areas, or click n drag images. I highly recommend this utility for support staff and business analysts that are writing business requirements.

Pros

  • Quick Photo Editing including cropping, resizing, snipping, framing, & commenting.
  • Quick Screen Captures by Key or Quick Menu on the screen edge. Whether you need a full screen, a selection, or a scrolling window capture, SnagIt covers it.
  • Very helpful for prototyping new app designs with its editing tools & transparency features.
  • Helps me capture screen shots and comment on changes for design team.

Cons

  • No side list view of all layers you paste into an image.
  • Text alignment is sometimes quirky with 4k displays. I have not run into this issue on other screens.
  • Standard highlighting colors work great. Custom colors many times distort the text you're trying to read.
  • No major enhancements year over year, more making sure the application continues to work 100% with its current capabilities for each new OS.

Most Important Features

  • Capturing Screen Shots
  • Quick Editing Capabilities including adding text, arrows, and general color adjustments
  • Image Layering capabilities

Return on Investment

  • Fast utility to snip and edit content to build documentation faster
  • Eliminates needs for tools like Visio for quick diagraming
  • Superior to tools like Windows snipping tool and paint

Snagit for all you capture needs. If you can see it you can Snagit!

Pros

  • Being able to take screen captures quickly and with just a keystroke is a prime feature. I took several screenshots just yesterday to show folks, which saved me from taking the time to meet with [...] everyone.
  • Obviously recording and sharing video is Snagit's strength. It does this as well as any product I have used. It is not an editor but there are a lot of capture features that cover just about any situation.
  • One great feature that Snagit has is the ability to pull text from a capture. We don't use this a lot but when it is needed it is a huge time saver.
  • The settings and tools within Snagit are intuitive and easy to find.

Cons

  • Snagit has been around for many years, it is a mature tool with great functions. There [are] no areas that I find difficult or lacking.
  • One thing to watch, and this is just a matter of data size as Snagit's videos are very high quality. Hard drive space, if you are recording a lot of videos they do take up space so this is one area to watch as you can fill a drive. I personally save to an external drive to save space on my internal drive.

Most Important Features

  • Quick and easy screen captures with great markup tools
  • Great video recording features with the ability to do voice overs
  • One feature I had not mentioned is the sharing capabilities of Snagit. It can take time if you have to save the video to [the] desktop and then upload it somewhere off-site for sharing. Snagit lets you skip the middle step and allows you to share video right to most of the main video platforms as well as through email, text, etc. I just happen to use Vimeo and can send a recording directly to Vimeo without having to save it to my desktop first. A great time-saving feature.

Return on Investment

  • There is no doubt that Snagit has saved us a huge amount of time. Our time is valuable so the ROI there is very high.
  • I think the most positive impact is with the clients. They love the explainers and the training videos. It makes their life easier as they can watch on their time as opposed to setting up an online meeting and then never really covering what we need to. A very big convenience factor that my clients have thanked me for more than once.
  • The only negative is that it's not free! But it's not expensive either, it's a great tool and I can't really say anything bad.

The all-in-one tool for screen and video capture

Pros

  • Video capture - the countdown feature is great so you can set the scene. And you can convert to a gif and easily copy and paste to an email or messenger app.
  • Markup - easily blur areas, crop, cut out (in the middle of images), add text, add arrows or boxes around areas and much more.
  • Scrolling capture - allows me to grab images that span several scrolls to get everything in one image.

Cons

  • Image merge - I wish there was an easier way to merge two images in one.
  • Scrolling capture - even though this is one thing I love, sometimes the text gets wonky when I use this feature.
  • The shortcut - this feature feels super unnecessary. And it can be annoying when every time I move my mouse to the right of the screen it pops up.

Most Important Features

  • Video capture and conversion into gif
  • The ability to quickly use edit and save images
  • The image library which saves every capture ever taken

Return on Investment

  • It has allowed us to save money by using one tool across our department (previously each person used their own tool, often, expensing is on the company’s tab)
