What is Justworks?

Justworks offers a platform for payroll, benefits, compliance support, with HR tools. As a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), Justworks offers PEO solutions that can bundle payroll, compliance, HR, and benefits under the Justworks umbrella, and help to administer employment-related responsibilities on the user's behalf. With Justworks' group buying power, customers can get access to PEO health insurance and other perks at more affordable rates.

The vendor states that as a certified and accredited professional employer organization (PEO), Justworks is subject to stringent operational and financial standards set by the IRS and ESAC.

Poor support, Good for very small employers.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a PEO provider, JustWorks assists us with compliance, payroll, some benefit administration, and general employee file management. It houses all of our current HR functions and assists with tracking changes in labor laws across the country. We generally do not use their HR consulting services nor do we engage with their insurance programs. We use their in-house 401k, Workers Comp, Commuter Benefits, and Disability Insurance.

Pros

  • Onboarding
  • Reporting
  • Legal tracking through Mineral

Cons

  • Customer Support
  • Payroll/Expense Processes
  • Time Tracking
  • Mobile Application
  • Invoicing

Return on Investment

  • Labor Law tracking (time saving)
  • Centralized tools

Usability

Great platform, especially for 100 and under employees with a ton of expertise.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In our organization we use Justworks to process payroll, pay vendors and contractors and provide employees with Discrimination and Harassment Training. We also use the space for providing annual tax information as well as some documents since terminated employees retain access to Justworks. Additionally, Justworks administers our benefits, manages our tax filings, workers comp insurance and unemployment claims.

Pros

  • Tax filings, workers comp and unemployment.
  • Benefits administration.
  • Support.

Cons

  • Bulk upload for onboarding, offboarding and documents.
  • I-9 (e-verify requires a SSN, but it is not a required field, resulting in employees who don't provide it to have to correct outside of the workflow)
  • Reporting.

Return on Investment

  • We hire 200 employees seasonally, processing required tax filings with different states would be a big lift on our organization.
  • They provide support to our platform admins and staff.

Justworks for Small Business & Startups - a great PEO option!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Justworks is one of my go-to Professional Employment Organizations (PEOs) for clients needing payroll services and/or a healthcare solution for their employees. Especially for those organizations with little to no HR experience or support, Justworks provides an easy to use interface and excellent customer service for both routine and complicated HR situations.

Pros

  • Payroll Services
  • Healthcare
  • HR Labor Laws (State, City, Federal)
  • Customer Service - General product help, HR Specialists on call

Cons

  • Justworks is great but a newer PEO

Return on Investment

  • Employee Satisfaction - Justworks is a much easier employee self-service tool than our prior PEO
  • Cost to the business - Justworks offered a better solution for less cost
  • Ease of implementation - Justworks is easy to use from an administrative and user standpoint and their IT teams and customer support were talented, quick and easy to work with during the (short) PEO implementation window.

Justworks Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We moved from a payroll service to Justworks about 5 months ago to get the benefit of being with a PEO. There have been some benefits of the PEO side. The payroll side is another story. In my experience, our payroll process now takes at least 20 minutes longer per payroll and is much more complex and cumbersome than our old provider. Their marketing and onboarding people are helpful, but the payroll process itself is enough of a headache, in my opinion, and we may consider moving away from them in 2024.

Pros

  • Marketing
  • Onboarding

Cons

  • I believe the payroll process and module is clumsy, cumbersome, and complex (compared with many others I've used)

Most Important Features

  • Payroll
  • HR management

Return on Investment

  • Negative - In my expereince, the payroll process has frustrated employees and users and has taken much more time, so it ends up costing even more than the price tag of the Justworks fees I've found

Most Important Features

  • Unified HR, Benefits, and Payroll
  • Employees have access to update their own information
  • Competitive healthcare coverage

Return on Investment

  • I spend 5 hours less per week on payroll and benefits related tasks
  • The PEO model has enabled us to provide higher quality healthcare than we could normally afford
  • Our employees are happier and have more transparency over their benefits
