Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Epic is our Electronic Medical Record and encompasses both the clinical and business office functions in our organization. Epic is the most critical application in our environment and has radically improved our ability to offer competent and professional care to our patients. Our use of an EMR has evolved over the years and, it's fair to say that Epic has played a major part of that.

  • Epic writes all code in-house to ensure interoperability between modules.
  • Epic does not allow their customers to lag behind on older verision.
  • Epic pushes their customers to keep equipment up to date and patched.

Cons

  • Sometimes, Epic doesn't understand that companies run on tight budgets.

Return on Investment

  • Epic is not inexpensive; but, because it make providers more efficient, ultimately they're able to treat more patients.

I'm in love with Epic!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a Team Lead, my role includes providing training of this software to my team members who are working as a remote medical scribes. They help in charting patient info into the EHR by listening to the doctor-patient conversation while working as a remote medical scribe from India for US physicians. This way we're helping doctors minimize their burnout by reducing their documentation workload.

Pros

  • Accessing required patient info from old health records while creating note in the EHR for current visit.
  • Users can easily create and pull dot phrases in the notes which comes handy while working on the note.
  • High security measures to take care of protected health information and HIPAA compliance.

Cons

  • It's a heavy software that requires high-end system configuration for smooth functionality. Because of this reason, it can make your system slow.
  • Users get disconnected and need to re-login from beginning with slightest internet fluctuation.
  • There is a room for improvement in the Support functionality. It's little tricky to reach out to them through Skype due to lack of clear instructions. Introduction of chat support can be considered.

Most Important Features

  • Simple and easy to understand preface.
  • Easy to access yet detailed data available.
  • Creating and using multiple dot phrases is a very useful feature.

The Best, Easiest Healthcare Platform!

Pros

  • There are doctors' notes templates with prepopulated fields in them. This saves a lot of time.
  • Epic sends medication orders to pharmacies electronically so that we do not have to call. This saves a lot of time.
  • Epic has a Secure Chat feature via which we can send HIPAA protected messages to any employee with the patient's name and record attached.
  • It has a PDMP link. We can look up what controlled medications such as opiates patients have been prescribed and by whom.
  • It links to MyChart, which is a platform via which patients can look up their own information without them having to call the doctors. This saves a lot of time.

Cons

  • It is difficult to delete erroneously created encounters or patient visits.
  • Most of my patients are outpatient, and it is difficult to find how to create a work excuse or any other letter on a hospital template.
  • It is difficult to find patient information to print regarding their illnesses - such as dementia, healthy eating, weight loss. For those, I go to UpToDate.

Return on Investment

  • It must have had a positive impact as things get done quicker, leading to easier billing/coding. It must be saving a lot of money and time. I am not aware of a better product.
