What is ControlUp?

ControlUp, from the company of the same name headquartered in San Francisco, offers an end user experience monitoring focuses on being able to easily find the root cause of IT issues, remediate directly from its UI vs. having to rely on several tools, and strategically analyze historical resources, usage, and issues data.

Controlup is a Market leader in VDI estate

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

it's a wonderful monitoring tool for VDI's

Controlup we used for citrix and AVD both the products.

it has good set of information when we look for troubleshooting end user issues such as looking over login delays.

CPU/Memory/IOPS/Bandwidth(AVD)

Have built the whole controlup setup in azure and as well as in onprem too

recent insights of controlup is a real add-on when we look over historical data either for a user or its for a whole lot of stuff they included

even i did controlup administrator certification too.

its not only for monitoring anymore its having much more automation scripts to utilize

Pros

  • Automation such as exe level of killing, GPO push for all machines, copy files to each VDI
  • Bandwidth calculations/CPU/Memory
  • Insights

Cons

  • NA

Most Important Features

  • recently we have seen it started integrating with market leaders such as Nerdio

Return on Investment

  • its licensing cost is a bit on high

Other Software Used

Liquidware ProfileUnity, Azure Analysis Services

ControlUp - Easy to use and very powerful

Pros

  • The triggers are very flexible and can be configured to alert on things from events in sessions to hardware failures. Script actions are what they sound like. They are scripts that can be created and run on demand or tied to a trigger. One example is that if a hard drive is low on space we have a script to clean up certain things on the drive.
  • Script actions are supported by the ControlUp community. Community members can submit scripts that are reviewed by ControlUp and approved. This means more script are added over time.
  • ControlUp support and sales support has been great. Our sales engineer is always willing to jump on and help us with configuration issues and standard support is quick to respond and are good at resolving issues.

Cons

  • ControlUp has a quick and easy way to submit feature request but I with they had a public list of things being proposed that the community could vote on to show what is important to those of us that use the product.
  • The console is very memory intensive. They are working on a web version but I am not sure how long it will be before they get all the same features in the new web console.

Most Important Features

  • Real time monitoring that can help you quickly find what might be causing an issue.
  • Triggers for alerting.
  • Script Actions

Return on Investment

  • The ControlUp console has ways to quickly identify issues. Other tools I have reviewed did a great job of collecting data but it did not present it in a way that made it easy to find an issue.
  • We had very little ability to provide management kinds of reports before we started using ContolUp. Now we can quickly tell management things like how many people are connected. How many different devices have connected to our environment. Hardware use and performance.

We're really happy with ControlUp

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a single location accounting firm with a 100% VDI platform. We use ControlUp to manage, monitor, and troubleshoot this environment. We are also trying to use the ScoutBees module for user experience and uptime monitoring. We'll use ControlUp to help make resource allocation decisions going forward (e.g. how much RAM and CPU to allocate to VMs). We've already used it to reduce logon times.

Pros

  • Easy to find information when troubleshooting a problem
  • Information is clearly presented
  • Information is easy to arrange (sort, filter, drill down)
  • Information provided is useful out of the box but can also be customized

Cons

  • It seems that there is a gradual transition occurring from one interface (a local program) to another (Web). This creates confusion at times.
  • ScoutBees module has a problem with our version of Horizon, so we can't do a login test
  • The local program for ControlUp uses a lot of resources
  • The training session focus on very large environments, which we aren't. Might be good to offer SMB sessions separately.

Most Important Features

  • Ease of use
  • Exhaustive information provided about monitored systems

Return on Investment

  • It led us to make some quick and simple changes that reduced our logon times by 25%
  • We are better able to evaluate CPU and (especially) RAM utilization in our VDI pools (used for planning)
