we use the Cisco Catalyst IE9300 Rugged Series Switches in harsh environmental conditions, it solved our business need by ensuring that we can use both SDA and extend our 802.1x wired network for both Wired and Wireless clients into challenging areas where cooling and other environmental conditions arent suitable for a traditional catalyst 9300 series network switch

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In our organization, those Cisco Catalyst IE9300 rugged switches are deployed in remote, non-climate-controlled huts to connect telemetry sensors monitoring our asset along the railway lines. They address challenges such as extremely high temperatures and humidity during our sizzling and wet summer season, as well as dust spread around by the product we hauled.

Pros

  • it uses ios-xe platform which we already are familiar with, so easy to get those configured up
  • it works well in hot and humid days, very high reliability
  • it integrates well into Cisco Catalyst Centre, made the management of the devices easy.

Cons

  • we identified an unpublished bug that the devices are all generating the same engine id for snmp v3, hence could not get the snmp v3 working on all of the devices.
  • for improvement, maybe Cisco can introduce some edge computing or AI driven diagnostics to preemptively flag network anomalies.
  • we bought the 24 port version of the switches 9320, it would be good to introduce some switches modules that can easily get the switch port density upgrade in case we need to have more, rather than buying a whole new switch.

We have a dual setup where the switches act in a primary and secondary configuration. It helps solve the need for redundancy.

Pros

  • The configurations and commands inputted on the CLI are quick.
  • The switches have standard/similar CLI commands across Cisco products.

Cons

  • Not all commands are intuitive and a lot of them are unused in our environment; lack of database to learn more commands (or awareness).

Return on Investment

  • Neutral; the device works as intended with little to no problems. There are no features that I am able to think of that would could be added.
  • One positive impact could be the fact that it will explain the CLI commands as you tab through.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We mainly use a Cisco Catalyst IE9300 Rugged Series Switches for our line environment, including access level and distribution level and the core level data transmission. Of course we go from Cisco, Cisco Firewall and to protect our line environment safe from the outside work. My job is daily maintenance. This all candidates infrastructure, make them 24 hours online per day.

Pros

  • First of all, if I encounter something, it's really easy for me to find an answer from Google. That's because that's a very famous company, lots of people using that. And for example, what if we have a bot or something? Hard questions, hard problems. It's really easy to find out from the outside world because everybody use it.

Cons

  • Because currently we want to replace our carrier SD one product into Cisco one. I did a test for the Cisco with tele. That product is really good and the features and functionality is very comprehensive, but the problem is really, really hard to deploy it. I spent two or three days to set the environments up but compare with its competitors too much time, too much effort on this. It's not saying the Cisco tele is not good because it provides a very comprehensive features, but sometimes they make it too complex.

  • Of course, it's really positive. I got courses. It's helped me to familiar with each single, each effects of the network technologies and it's really helpful to help me hands on this product like the firewall data center product and the catalyst, which is that kind of product. Really helpful.
