Authorize.net helped me build my business

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I used Authorize.net to process credit card transactions for all clients in my consulting business. I had gotten a referral about them from a colleague who'd used them for years. Fortunately, I don't have receivables. I take payment at the time an appointment is booked . Authorize.net accepts all major credit cards and made the operational side of my business easy. Their monthly reports are very useful to reconcile payments. I found them very responsive to my customer service needs.

Pros

  • Tracking monthly business volume
  • Tracking clients by volume
  • Customer service

Cons

  • It was a little difficult to understand some of the settings on my account
  • Individual credit cards had different rules and it wasn't always clear why I was charged additional fees.

Return on Investment

  • My business grew between 8% - 15% each year
  • My customers (over 2000) were pleased with my payment service/ ease of use / professionalism
  • The reports helped me stay organized and on top of my finanicals. I can't quantify how much that brought in but overall definitely a time saver.

Reliable... Once you get going!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have a home inspection business and customers pay by credit card 90% of the time. Once an inspection is scheduled, an email is generated asking the customer to follow a link in order to sign an inspection agreement and make payment by credit or debit card. In my business, not taking a credit card is not an option, merely a matter of choosing which payment processing platform we choose to do business with.

Pros

  • Reliable
  • Established
  • High data encryption security.

Cons

  • Very difficult to establish account.
  • Initial setup was time-consuming and not user friendly.
  • Processing times are not consistent.

Most Important Features

  • Security
  • Processing times.
  • Ease of use.

Return on Investment

  • Avenue to be compensated for my work.
  • Negative in that processing times can be very inconsistent.
  • User interface is simple.

Authnet - Reliable, Cheap, Secure

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Authorize.Net as our payment processor for both our in-house bespoke ordering system, and for out online shopping cart in BigCommerce. It replaced another processor, Transaction Express. Authnet provides the features and security that we need while also maintaining a low overhead cost for our company. We haven't been able to beat their fee schedules with any alternatives yet. They've always been very reliable and easy to work with as well.

Pros

  • Very smooth workflow to authorizing, capturing, voiding, and refunding charges. This can all be done via API calls, or through their online dashboard.
  • Their AVS settings for validating credit cards are substantial and have been reliable in ensuring that our customers cards are being used safely and properly.
  • Their uptime and response times are very good in general. The only issues we ever have communicating with their services is when our connection quality is compromised.

Cons

  • Their webhooks that provide automated alerts on transactions, subscriptions, and other events are less than reliable. We had significant difficulty with them not arriving consistently, and when they are missed they can be very difficult to regenerate.
  • It is probably more related to banking guidelines, but it can be frustrating when a customer pays up front for an item on backorder, and then has to cancel their order later. Depending on the length of time, Authnet may not allow the refund to be conducted to the card.
  • I think this is also on the individual card issuer, but some of the errors for card declines are opaque. There are very transparent and specific errors available, but a lot of issuers just provide back a generic "please contact card issuer" instead of giving a reason for a decline.

Most Important Features

  • API with rich features, including the ability to create customer and payment profiles
  • High level of security and strong filtering against fraud attempts
  • Easy to use dashboard with a good paper trail

Return on Investment

  • It reduced our cost per transaction by about 0.5%, which is quite significant over a year of credit transactions for us.
  • It has dramatically increased customer and employee confidence in the security of our transactions compared to our previous solution.
  • We saw approximately a 30% reduction in failed communication efforts with our payment processor. Authnet was substantially more reliable during closing with large batches of transactions.
