Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Arcserve Backup UDP for our primary image based backup and data protection solution. We use Arcserve Cloud Direct as our secondary offsite cloud backup solution.

Pros

Arcserve Backup has many offerings to fit many business sizes and needs.
It offers excellent features like dedupe, high availability, DR, and BMR.
Arcserve Backup sales and technical support is good to work with.
Very nice reseller program and benefits.

Cons

Arcserve Backup can be costly.
To utilize Arcserve Backup and all its features may require a layout of dedicated equipment or additional infrastructure.
They don't always explain that for Arcserve Backup to work well, and it requires specific system requirements and extensive internet bandwidth.

Likelihood to Recommend

For small, medium or large size businesses, Arcserve Backup offers lots of rich features for the price and depending on configuration can provide everything from basic backups to full-scale data management, protection, and fast recovery. BMR features allow for quicker recovery of windows servers and workstations. Having cloud-based storage options allows for Arcserve Backup to cover local, offsite and DR backup scenarios.

A Solid Backup Solution Especially for Smaller Locations and Backing Up Physical Servers

We have been using Arcserve Backup for over 20 years to back up our physical servers to tape. During this time, we have seen many changes and features added. It has been a solid, reliable product the entire time. We have used it with a variety of tape devices/types and it has always proven itself to be dependable. The user interface has changed over time and in the very beginning, it took time to get used to setting up jobs, and when needed to learn how to successfully restore files, etc. Once we became very familiar with, it was easy to manage. As things changed and we went into Vmware Virtualization, we chose a different backup option to use for that particular environment. Arcserve remains our backup solution for all our physical servers at our smaller sites that we did not virtualize, due to cost and need.

Pros

A solid reliable backup solution with a proven track record.
Great functionality that allows monitoring and provides alerts.
A cost-effective solution, especially for smaller sites.
Restoration when needed, has always been able to give us the data required without failure.
Product support has always been excellent when needed.

Cons

Initially, the setup, configuration, and management can be a bit daunting as is the overall learning curve.

Likelihood to Recommend

I think that Arcserve Backup is especially well suited for smaller locations, sites that have physical servers, or in locations where cost is a concern. I have not used it with Vmware, as we use Veeam Backup and Replication for that, but I understand that it is fully capable to do a great job with virtual environments. We have also not used it for replication, but know that it performs this task very well.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We were using an antique version of Symantec Backup Exec at the time and realized with our global footprint growing, we needed a superior solution that would not only provide better backup functionality but also the scope to replicate our live environment. Arcserve Backup and Replication is now used by our IT department to maintain daily backups, and also maintain replication of our physical servers to our DR site.

Pros

Cost - A very affordable solution.
Support and Sales - Arcserve has been top notch to us with the sales process and support.
Replication - One of the core reasons we selected the product. We find the replication side of the software fantastic.
Backup - An excellent backup product that provides just great functionality and restore-ability at a granular level.

Cons

Has a steep learning curve to the product, if not experienced in backup solutions.
Windows backup and restore functionality is excellent, however, we have found Linux somewhat lacking.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you have a large enterprise level environment and want to not only improve your backup systems but also implement replication then Arcserve is well suited. If you only have a small number of machines or are primarily Linux based, then the product is simply not suited and there are better alternates out there.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Aarcserve to backup more than 10 servers with a customized D2D2T three weeks scheduled job. Our single tape drive was so small, but Arcserve has enough options to customize it to fit our needs.

Pros

Easy to use.
Simple configuration.
Easy to customize using script.

Cons

Support line just send a link so I have to research by my own.
Requires you to buy a license for every agent add on.
VMWare compatibility.

Likelihood to Recommend

Easy to create a backup job and restore once configured correctly but it does not run smoothly if the data storage is not correctly allocated.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We initially used a backup-to-tape solution utilizing a 2 tape drive 66 slot robotic library, backing up 1.4 TB of Windows and Linux files nightly. Our backup window exceeded 20 hours and had encroached our production window. Performance was being impacted. We purchased 2 Arcserve UDP 7300v appliances; one on premises, the other geographically located approximately 230 miles away. Arcserve now protects 10.2 TB, which dedupes down to approximately 2.6 TB. Our backup window has dropped from +20 hours to 45 minutes or less. All data is kept on the premises and replicated to the second unit that is offsite, providing redundancy. The 2nd Arcserve UDP appliance, which backs up servers at the offsite, replicates its data back to our home site. Arcserve UDP also provides data archive-to-tape (annual and quarterly) and local data file backup. Arcserve UDP excels in providing both. File restores are painless and flawless.

Pros

Backs up Windows and Linux virtual and physical servers quickly. After the initial full backup, data is deduped and compressed. This dramatically reduced the backup window. Restores are easily accomplished, using intuitive web interfaces.
The data is easily replicated between units. Scheduled to occur in the middle of the night, network bandwidth is not dramatically impacted. Truly, a set it and forget it operation.
Using the appropriate UDP, administrators can actually "spin up" a virtual machine from the latest backup, allowing disaster recovery on your critical servers while repairing failures in the background.
Copy-to-Tape function is available. This satisfies annual and quarterly data retention requirements.

Cons

Linux backup status reports are not as granular as the Windows status reports. Linux email reporting does not include missed backup jobs, backup, or replication failures or success.

Likelihood to Recommend

Restorations are easy and painless. These Arcserve appliances have exceeded my expectations. Our daily “bread-and-butter” operations revolve around web servers and databases. I feel more confident than ever that file/database recovery operations will continue to be successful. These appliances live up to their claims.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Arcserve UDP is deployed on all of our data centers and branch offices; we use it for central and remote sites backup, and for replication and disaster recovery. Additionally, we use the UDP for automatic DR testing and protection of all of our VMs, physical machines, applications, and databases.

Arcserve was the solution we chose to backup and restore our company's critical data. It was used across the entire organization.

Pros

Arcserve allowed us to manage the data in all our of our locations with ease.
Very stable product. No crashes, no rebuilds, reinstalls, etc.

Cons

The online community/knowledge base is lacking
The learning curve is a bit high.

It is well suited for an all-in-one backup solution. Also works well with Exchange.
