Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use the Veeam Data Platform as a backup, recovery and resiliency tool for our on premise physical servers and VMWare virtualised infrastructure. Veeam Data Platform also provides replication of core LoB servers and data to multiple production hosts and to off site Disaster recovery locations. Veeam Data Platform ensures our on premise data is protected and readily available in the event of a disaster. Our use of the platform currently ends with our on premise infrastructure. Our cloud and M365 data is backed up via other means.
Pros
- Intuitive software makes administration as simple as possible for such a complex product. Creating and managing backups can be a swift process at the basic level.
- Managing multiple servers and locations is enhanced with Enterprise Manager. Keeping the server and backup inventory in one location is manageable.
- The flexibility of what to backup, how to back it up and where to back it up to is second to none. the ability to add storage targets, offsite locations and cloud locations is straight forward.
Cons
- The cloud backup application adds too much complexity to the backup of cloud assets, particularly in Azure and doesn't add enough to the standard Azure Backup centre. Particularly when the cost is considered.
- The M365 / Entra backup tools are early in their lifespan and not as well developed and feature rich as some other products on the market.
- The core application consists of lots of components. The upgrade process is simple enough but can be time consuming. Particularly if there are elements of the product that aren't actually required.
- It's very hard to quantify this kind of thing. The ROI is the peace of mind knowing Veeam Data Platform is an excellent solution. Restoring backups in production is only needed if something has gone wrong!
- It is certainly a time saver from an administrative perspective. Once configured, the daily admin of the product is minimal and the time to restore is very efficient (subject to the size of data being recovered).
- The majority of the business do not know Veeam Data Platform is even there. It silently protects the business, which is what we truly want from a backup and recovery tool.
- AvePoint Cloud Backup, Azure Backup and Veritas Backup Exec
For the on-prem workloads Veeam Data Platform is a far superior product in terms of deployment options, flexibility, managability and scalability. It's mature and well developed features make it a no-brainer in this scenario.
For the cloud workloads we found Veeam Data Platform a little lacking compared to AvePoint and that it added unnecessary levels of complexity and costs compared to Azure native backup. However, this is likely because or cloud infrastructure is basic and in its early days and as this matures and develops the use case for Veeam Data Platform may come into focus.
