Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Veeam is used as the primary backup solution for our server environment. It helps us with traditional backup protection and off-site retention needs.

Pros

  • Easy to setup backup jobs.
  • Easily definable retention schedules to meet business or compliance requirements.
  • Backup recoverability testing saves time and effort for an essential task.

Cons

  • Backup copy settings don't allow blocking an update to a target that might serve more than one organization.
  • Somewhat difficult navigation if not used frequently.
  • Managing the scope of alerts and criteria are limited.
  • Based on the business retention goals our originally scoped capacity needed to be expanded. This is not uncommon with any backup solution where data size is not easily calculated.
  • The ability to backup copy to another site for redundancy purposes has alleviated a compliance burden previously achieved through more manual efforts.
  • We've been able to standardize most of ours virtualization backups around Veeam leading to uniformity and consistency in support and usability.
Veeam is a great backup engine to replace more legacy backup solutions. While it does have an agent for physical hosts, its real strengths are around virtualized workloads. Depending on specific data sets to be backed up, the capacities of them, and a companies' interest in managing both the software side of things (Veeam) while maintaining flexibility in what's used as a backup target, Veeam is a great option to consider.
