Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Veeam B&R is being used across our organization in two datacentres. It was primarily brought in to modernize our older backup system (NetBackup) and to reduce our backup windows.

Pros and Cons

Pros

User interface is easy to manage.
Restoring from file/brick-level backup is much easier than recovering from our old backup.
Scheduling is easy to understand and manage.

Cons

When mounting a backup for restore, this process can be slow.

Return on Investment

Positive because we are not spending money on tapes.
Also not spending as much on offsite tape storage. Our data is still replicated offsite, and tapes go offsite weekly vs daily.
Shorter backup windows ensure that we are not juggling data retention esp with larger SQL backups.

We changed our backup method from daily tapes to daily backup to disk and then tape weekly. This shortened our backup windows and enabled much quicker backup windows. The ability to restore files/application-level data easily made it easier to offload this job to junior admins and free up our time.
