Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Backup & Replication

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Veeam Backup & Replication is being used by the IT department as our primary backup and disaster recovery product. We use it for disk backups, tape backups, and management of both file and system recovery. We have a mix of VMware virtual machines, bare metal servers, and client workstations that are currently being protected by this suite.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Easy-to-use recovery of guest files
Quick point-in-time recovery of SQL objects
Instant restore of VM from backup repository--this allows you to bring a failed system online in a degraded state and then inflate to full storage

Cons

Tape management is still a bit of a pain; I'm happy they have it, but it's not a strength
Multiple tasks happening at once sometimes cause conflicts; we manually set schedules for our backups so they don't interfere with each other
Retrying jobs is sometimes a problem; sometimes the only solution is running a full backup, as it won't continue from where it failed

Return on Investment

Being able to manage backups on site has allowed us to have quick recovery when needed and reduced our storage costs--cloud wasn't an option for our organization.
Due to Veeam Backup & Replication, we have experienced zero downtime that would impact business systems.

Likelihood to Recommend

I can't imagine using another product for on-premises virtual machines. Veeam Backup & Replication should be the de-facto standard for any virtualized environment. Replication of our repositories automatically flows when the system it at lower load and adjusts based on running backups. Tape management is automatic and based on the tape serial number. The system just works--it's fantastic.
