Overall Satisfaction with Cisco Routers

Our Cisco Routers are being used accross our organization at multiple sites. While they typically serve the function of a reliable and "bulletproof" internet edge router, they can also handle a robust QoS workload. This had been especially useful at some of our sites that have firewalls deployed at the edge that are only capable of supporting a limited number of QoS classes. The ASRs gives us the flexibility of extending our QoS requirements (where QoS'ing closer to the source is not possible) with very minimal limitations.

Pros

  • ASRs do a phenomenal job of handling large routing tables
  • Fast packet processing
  • Aggregating multiple WAN connections
  • Handling large flows of traffic

Cons

  • I think there should be a bit more QA and testing done on new image releases. Some of the images released within the last couple years had more bugs than I expected. Thankfully, some of the bugs were just cosmetic in nature but could still confuse network engineers when troubleshooting certain issues.
  • Due to their reliability, they've provided high uptimes for our sites and venues (which is critical during events)
  • They've been able to handle full internet BGP tables without breaking a sweat. At peak times in our business, they easily forward large aggregate amounts of data without a hiccup.
  • If you're troubleshooting at the edge, on your ASR, that can often mean you're troubleshooting a critical issue. This means that time is of the essence. Using Cisco IOS XE on the ASRs is a pleasure. Everything is snappy, to the point, and the output is very informational.
Cisco Routers are the most reliable and stable internet edge routers ive used. They' have also always offered high performance for the most demanding traffic workloads. Lastly, from all of the various vendors I've used, Cisco routsrs have the best TAC support.

Do you think Cisco Routers delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Cisco Routers's feature set?

Yes

Did Cisco Routers live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Cisco Routers go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Cisco Routers again?

Yes

Cisco Routers, particularly ASRs, are well suited at the edge or perimeter of your network topology since they're capable of aggregating large data and performing fast packet processing. To be even more specific, they are great at handling full internet BGP route tables and aggregating multiple WAN connections. Some scenarios where they may be less appropriate might be for much smaller sites running less critical services that may not need "state of the art" enterprise routers.
