Cisco ASR Routers

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

This router can be used as the Internet edge router peering with BGP. We also use this router to establish site to site VPN to external business vendors. This enable us to have network connectivity with the Internet and with external business partners.

Pros

  • To establish connection with Internet Service Provider.
  • To establish site to site VPN connections with external partners.
  • Virtualize the router so we can handle different network segmentations.

Cons

  • Terminate Direct Internet Access connection with ISP. Run BGP routing to affect inbound and outbound Internet traffic.
  • Establish IPSec VPN connections to external partner. Run BGP routing to affect inbound and outbound traffic with different partner networks.
  • Using the VRF configuration to virtual the router to different network segments. This enables us to handle traffic to different partners independently.

Return on Investment

  • The router virtualization allows us to use single hardware to support different use-cases the same time, thus saving hardware investment.
  • The technical support from Cisco is very strong and is willing to advise on different configuration options to address the requirement.
  • Cisco equipment is more expensive than other router vendors, and the support cost isn't cheap either.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Typically used across campus/offsite/small practices, as well as for VPNs.

Pros

  • VPN
  • Routing
  • Security
  • QOS Management.

Cons

  • Simplify Configurations and User interface.
  • They're very expensive - should be more competitive.

Return on Investment

  • Provides efficiency through Network Reliability and Scalability, providing good uptime, advanced routing, and QOS. Reducing downtime prevents costs across our business.
  • Cisco routers deliver a superior customer experience, ensuring application performance across our businesses.
  • The negative impacts have been costly. Licensing fees and costs of equipment prevent businesses like ours from expanding or improving other aspects of our business operations. The end of life of the products comes quickly, and the cost to upgrade/renew puts a damper on our ability to purchase other equipment needed for patient support in healthcare.

Cisco Router

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The provide connectivity various branch offices and can provide redundant paths so the network reach ability between sites stays operational. Cisco routers also provide SRST functionality to make 911 calls and can assist in dhcp requests. Routers also provide multicast functionality and routing capabilities to route between multiple subnets providing segmentation.

Pros

  • Hot swappable routing protocol allows two routers to act as one for redundancy
  • Routers have serial connections to use T1 technologies
  • Routers have robust quantum flow processors to store all the routing tables

Cons

  • Cisco routers could have more ports
  • Cisco Routers could have more applications like thousand eyes run on it's cpu for monitoring and troubleshooting capabilites
  • routers could have more malware protection
