We have Avalara prepare use-tax returns for digital commerce that we conduct in roughly 40 states throughout the US.

I think your business needs to have enough sales and diverse enough operations to justify bringing in some of their products. They are not necessarily geared toward small business owners & "mom & pop" operations, although I do remember them saying they are scaling their offerings to be friendlier to smaller entities.

Alternatives Considered

I have not used any similar products. I think Avalara is very valuable in the right situation but also has room to improve certain features, offerings.

Likelihood to Recommend

Avalara has been tremendously valuable as far as comparing our ERP sales-tax results to Avalara. They have also been invaluable as far as our tax compliance in states outside of Pennsylvania, where we do not have a physical presence. Avalara has been disappointing, in my opinion, regarding communication about time-sensitive issues.
