Overall Satisfaction with Avalara

I use Avalara for two companies -- one using a Shopify feed and the other that sells only on Amazon. Avalara solves my state sales tax filings for both companies. With the Shopify store, the feed is automatic and I just have to review the liability worksheet once a month. With the Amazon store, I have to upload transactions from Amazon and then review the liability worksheet. It's easy to pull returns and track filings.

Pros

  • My account rep (Tosca) has been excellent in dealing with any issues I many have.
  • Sales tax filings are timely.
  • It's easy to track and obtain copies of filings.
  • There are a ton of helpful reports.

Cons

  • For Amazon manual transaction upload, it would be great if there was an automatic way to pull the Amazon report and upload rather than reformat.
  • It would cost a lot of time and money to file all of the state sales returns manually and would not be worth it.
Once I took the time to learn all of the reporting and the integration, it is a very robust platform. The compliance team is excellent as well. I don't feel like anything falls through the cracks.
For our Amazon store, we used TaxJar, but they didn't seem to be able to keep up with the demand to add states.
I've used other platforms and I don't think there is a more accurate or better platform for sales tax compliance on the market. It's better than doing it yourself. I would highly recommend Avalara.
