I personally think Vertex is the leader in tax provisioning for transactions created in systems like Oracle, Coupa etc. Vertex has the reliable and strong tax calculation system for invoices and the issues have always been resolved on time with your excellent support.

We currently use Vertex with purchase/sales transactions and tax calculations for all 50 states as we deal with multiple companies that span the US. We primarily specialize in sales / use TAX
Pros
Ease of use for creating new databases
Quickly provide detailed reports for all 50 states in exportable PDF format
Customer support is on point and able to quickly resolve any issues
Cons
Make full installation packages available at each release instead of yearly.
Not require incrementally stepping through updates. I understand the reason behind it, but if you have to install a new copy in later part of the year you have to step through Jan->current month updates one by one and update every database. For large number of databases, it could take 5-20 minutes each time and then multiplied by number of months.
Likelihood to Recommend
It's best suited for sales/use tax professionals than it is VAT. I assume mainly because it's set up for the USA tax system and 50 state reporting.
It's less suited for someone not familiar with SQL as it requires a SQL server for hosting it's database.

Our company uses Vertex for sales transactions in the US and Canada. We do not use Vertex for any purchase transactions. Vertex calculates all sales/use and VAT (Canada) for our company. Our company also uses Vertex Returns for filing sales tax returns. We utilize Vertex's RateLocator tool for tax rate lookups. Our company does not currently utilize the Vertex Exemption Certificate Manager, but we plan on doing so in the future.
Pros
Accurate tax calculations
Updated rates monthly
Fast customer service responses
Cons
Occasional issues with addresses calculating incorrect tax rates
Tax assist creator could be much simpler
Limited support for Vertex L

Vertex has been a very reliable and accurate tax calculation engine in the 9 years I have used it. It is relatively easy to learn and to teach others how to use its functionalities. Vertex does a really good job in ensuring that the tax rates are updated and they release an update once a month prior to month end. Customer service responds quickly to issues. The Vertex Returns package is very use to use and it is quite easy to transfer the data from Vertex L/O into Vertex Returns. Vertex's RateLocator tool is very simple but effective in looking up tax rates, either by jurisdiction or by zip code.

Vertex deals with complex tax computations, more so the sales and VAT taxes for companies. It supports complex transactions and high-volume computation for business sales tax. They offer reliable and updated tax content that is industry-specific. They have put technology at the forefront, which lets us set up custom taxability and automate exceptions management for every purchase and sales transaction.

Vertex O Series is used for U.S. and international transaction taxes across the whole organization. It addresses all of those that SAP native functionality cannot and also avoids maintenance.
Pros
User-friendly GUI
Transaction tester is very useful and user friendly.
Tax assist rules are not that complicated to build.
Cons
Product taxability mapping changes is not user friendly.
The import and export of tax data should be available at respective functionality area and not at tax administration - specific functionality to import/export.
The data extraction and reading is not straightforward, e.g., I cannot review my taxability mapping of product and tax category next to it. I need to filter out two sets of information and do a Vlookup and then put them together to review. There are many other such examples.
Vertex is being used by certain companies within our organization. Vertex addresses our indirect taxes for products and services we sell to customers. The tax department manages Vertex along with our IT department.
Pros
Calculation of sales taxes for U.S. and Canada
Updated rates
Integration with ERPs
Cons
Support - specifically more folks to assist and be available by telephone.
Likelihood to Recommend
I believe Vertex is well suited for implementation and integrations with ERPs for indirect tax calculations. I also believe the returns module and exemption certificate module are an added benefit to its customers. I would say Vertex is less suited for LATAM countries, however, the complexity of taxes in those regions is difficult no matter what system you attempt to utilize.

Our organization consults on the purchase of O Series for our clients and also assists clients with the implementation of O Series. It helps our clients solve their complex business problems in the indirect tax space of U.S. sales and use tax as well as international VAT and GST. We see our clients starting to utilize O Series on a more global basis.
Pros
The content is very detailed and helps companies make the correct indirect tax decisions.
The interfaces that O Series has with the major ERPs as well as the smaller ones gives it an advantage in the marketplace.
The user interface is very intuitive and easy to use.
Cons
I think that O Series can expand its content for the more complex countries like India and Brazil.
The new GUI for Version 9.0 will be interesting to see how it compares to the old GUI that many people are familiar with.
O Series could do a little better job with exposing the taxability matrices worldwide to an Excel format.
Likelihood to Recommend
I think Vertex O Series is very well suited to a U.S.-based country and would like to see more appropriate compatibility in the VAT/GST world. Vertex O Series has been well known to handle the U.S.-based indirect tax structure but can improve on its international capabilities and content.

CONA is a service company that provides an IT platform for 12 Coca Cola bottlers. We have Vertex 7.0 installed as our tax calculation engine and it is bolted on to our SAP environment. We use the O Series for transaction taxes in North America (including Canada). This includes Sales and Use, VAT, Container deposits, CRFs, soft drink taxes, and Sugar-sweetened beverage taxes. We are able to handle multiple types of transaction taxes in one system. It saves time and money.
Pros
The O Series does a good job keeping the rates current for multiple tax types and fees.
The O Series has been quick to work with us on new tax legislation around soft drink taxes that get passed quickly and are implemented quickly.
The O Series support has worked well with us on our issues that require quick correction.
Cons
Some of the changes that were made to the qualifying conditions from the conditional rules caused us issues. We would have liked it if Vertex had continued to support the original conditional rule design but we have moved past that issue now.
We have had to create some of our own rules to accommodate the origin rules for soft drink taxes. We had hoped vertex would have been quicker to handle those.
We do still have issues with the return export file. The data is not always correct but we are working with support on this.
Likelihood to Recommend
The content of Vertex is set up in a manner that works for our business. We can easily map to the rules and are able to make user changes easily. The tools for reporting in the O Series are beneficial to our bottlers. They can customize the reports to suit their needs and they like this flexibility. The partitioning feature was a must for us. We required a multi-tenant solution and the partition set up in the O Series provided our bottlers with the security they required and provided us the central repository that we needed for infrastructure and maintenance.
