We utilize Vertex for all of our purchasing and sales transactions in the US and Canada.

Pros

Our Customer Success Representative has been fantastic in assisting with research and resolving questions.
The community resources provide an excellent source of information and documentation related to the Vertex line of products.
Communication of changes in tax laws.

Cons

Some of the mapping tools within Vertex could use some updating.

Vertex supports both our sales transactions and purchase transactions for U.S. sales and use tax.

Pros

Completes timely filings on our behalf.
Completes accurate filings on our behalf.
Communicates directly with us should the need arise.
Vertex has dedicated, knowledgeable personnel assigned to our account.
Vertex does an excellent job of handling our U.S. sales and use tax filings.

Cons

Would appreciate notification status and updates from the notice portal (i.e. active notice notification; closed notice notification). Although we don't receive many notices this would be a nice feature.

To us Vertex's customer service approach and support is the best in the business. We really value Vertex's focus on this critical piece of our client partnership.

We use Vertex Cloud for US sales tax transactions.

Pros

Consulting arm if very helpful especially in year 1 and 2
I like the portal for everything reporting
Their billing process is seamless

Cons

Missing macro reporting options- each taxpayer has its own report set
Sales summary if woefully difficult - have to filter city county out of data in transactional files
dashboard not useful because we dont use Vertex returns, but it would be valuable for tracking our own work on returns

Likelihood to Recommend

Vertex Cloud is very well suited for a multistate retail operation with our taxability matrix. Our [...] footprint is far reaching and the compliance for zero tax due returns would be impossible without Vertex

Pros

We use Vertex for all US Tax and VAT/GST calculations for various other entities, such as Canada, India, and the EU region.

Pros

The O series product of vertex is very stable and we have not had any major tax calculations issues.
No Product/Environment outages.
Helpful UI to setup additional tax rules if/as needed
Provide upfront notifications for upcoming maintenance/technical changes to plan for the change.

Cons

Enhanced product UI - sometimes navigation is confusing
More reporting for Quotes Taxes (currently reports are available for only invoiced transactions.
allow for logging for a particular transaction/Integration etc filter's to debug currently need to enable debug for entire instance making it slow and the log very big.

I give Vertex a nine because there are no downtimes, and it covers multiple geographies seamlessly.

We use the Vertex sales tax engine to calculate U.S. Sales Tax, Canada GST/PST/QST, and Mexico VAT on our customer invoices.

Pros

It is a robust tool that can handle a variety cases.
It can handle high volume and data sets.
The reporting is customizable for different use cases.

Cons

Make it easier to search for a transaction directly on the portal.
Make it easier to identify the transaction between systems.
More user friendly reporting on the portal itself.

We have very high volume of customers which requires a lot of monthly, quarterly, and annual invoices, credit memos, debit memos to be processed.

We are using Vertex to house all our sales tax data and then file our monthly tax returns to the respective states and countries where we have nexus. Vertex helps us handles US sales tax, VAT, and nexus compliance.

Pros

The interface of Vertex is user-friendly and easy to follow when getting started.
Vertex reports functionality allows us to drill down into specific states or time frames.
Vertex support team has been so communicative and helpful month to month when we are preparing returns

Cons

Vertex could expand on their reconciliation report to build a bridge between transactions data and tax owed.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We mainly use Vertex for the purchase transactions for the United States use tax and international value-added taxes. We don't use Vertex for the U.S. sales tax for invoicing purposes.

Pros

Vertex catches invoices that we wouldn't have found for use-tax.
Improves our SOX and audit controls.

Cons

There were some weird bugs, such as California local taxes being doubled in the expected amount, causing huge variances while running reports.
Vertex O'Series can be confusing moving between all the different interfaces.

Likelihood to Recommend

Vertex is an excellent solution if you have locations all within a single state and don't have to worry about Multiple points of the user for software and other large purchases that may need to be sourced. While you can tweak and adjust software and other purchases, it requires much knowledge within O'Series and training to ensure you don't mess up the whole system.
