Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Provides daily backups of our entire VMware environment. Also, do hourly transaction log backups of our critical databases. Provides automated management of on-site and off-site backups for reliability and disaster recovery.

Pros

Integrates smoothly with our off-site data store.

Excellent notification levels for critical and non-critical failures in the backups.

Cons

A clearer description of the backup infrastructure.
Easier reporting on which backup job is backing up which server.
Prevent the creation of multiple backup repositories to a single destination.

Fantastic speed for backing up data to our protected storage. Being able to use the same job for both on-site and off-site storage ensures that we consistently achieve the correct backup levels for our data. Veeam is excellent for data replication for an off-site disaster recovery site. Keeping the data synced between the sites with minimal effort. Veeam struggles with some vendors doing backups of live databases. This may be a problem with the vendor versus Veeam.

In our organization, we use Veeam Data Platform primarily for data protection, disaster recovery, and business continuity. The platform supports our on-premises, cloud, and hybrid IT infrastructure by providing reliable and secure backup and recovery. Veeam Data Platform enables us to recover data quickly in the event of accidental deletion, hardware failure, ransomware attacks, or natural disasters to reduces potential downtime and data loss. ALso the platform helps us meet regulatory requirements like FERPA by keeping student records safe

The district I work for has used Veeam Data Platform for several years to back up all server data. Backups are easily verified and the restore process was easy when the backups were needed. While we have other forms of back up as well Veeam Data Platform is our primary solution.

We have two on-premise datacenters with an array of different storage types and a wide array of different business needs. Our data comes from a variety of sources and is governed by various different business requirements and legislative aspects given its nature, with some sensitive data including GDPR and medical data. We have seen similar organisations compromised by cyber attacks and this underlines the importance to us of an effective data protection solution.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Veeam to backup critical servers to offsite cloud storage, including our domain controllers, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, payroll application, and network management servers. The payroll application servers are backed up daily with a couple of others that have frequent changes, and the others are backed up weekly. We keep backups going back 6 months.

I use Veeam in a more limited deployment because I only have 5-10 servers that really require backup. Veeam allows me to provide comprehensive backups for these servers and gives me flexibility in how/where to store them. We didn't want to heavily invest in local storage since we have steadily been migrating to cloud based services, so Veeam fills that hole. It can do a lot more than I have need for, but I'm confident that it will expand easily as my needs may.

Veeam provides the application support to backup the critical resident VMs of our primary computing cluster and storage.array. This comprises currently approximately twenty virtual machines to be retained for years, and retrieved from or restored as dictated by events and organizational demands.

Veeam is an excellent solution for backing up your environment of VMWare or HyperV machines. We moved to them after working with several of their competitors, and the software is more intuitive than any other that I worked with in that time. Further, their support team has been excellent, not only addressing questions and issues directly with Veeam, but also in adjoining projects and products.
When we started with them, they were still bringing their physical client into the integrated fold, but now the agent backup looks much the same from the backend.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Veeam Data Platform essentials for daily and airgap backups of mission critical data to airgap and scale out file repositories.

The platform is solid to the point of being able to do an annual disaster recovery test rebuild from total disaster loss to getting back online from only a single airgap backup of all physical and virtual machines.

Pros

Backups/restores of on-prem physical, virual machines, and cloud
Data conversion between server platforms, particularly esxi ->Hyper-v.
Ability to do sandbox restores to verify data integrity.

Cons

Veeam B&R is service based and requires a lot of services to run so pretty long load time initially.
When using it with best practices, it is sometimes difficult to get to new, never-installed resources.
some issues backing up Linux servers with application-aware processing.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's overkill on very simple installations where simple backups would suffice.

Very well suited to mid-large orgenizations.

We utilized Veeam Data Platform to backup our VMs running on Nutanix AHV. We had it backing up VMs to different storage solutions including two onsite NAS and some within the VM that was running Veeam Data Platform. We had Veeam Data Platform setup to backup on specific schedules for specific use cases. We also therefore utilized Veeam Data Platform to restore deleted files and folders from some VMs as a method of easy recovery.

Small environments, who want a solution without an appliance. For us, Veeam Data Platform checked all the boxes at it's price point, but lacked immutable backup functionality. We could have improved our Veeam Data Platform instance to meet our needs, but instead chose to go with a solution that included an appliance to better meet our needs.
