A trip over monitoring with Splunk AppDynamics

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In my case, as a software developer at a financial institution, I am responsible for developing the integration layer in the bank's architecture, so I often use Splunk AppDynamics to monitor my applications: their heartbeats, their status, the number of users using my API, etc. It also shows me the links between the different services.

Pros

  • Status of microservices
  • relation between different microservices
  • number of users using my services

Cons

  • installation
  • using Splunk AppDynamics over cloud
  • setting Splunk AppDynamics configuration with microservices

Return on Investment

  • negative impact: too expensive for the annual licence fee
  • positive impact: comprehensive monitoring of every small and large detail of microservices
  • positive impact: in the event of a crash and shutdown, it helps you identify the area of failure

Practical and easy, outdated interface and low volume of new features.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The solution is used for end-to-end monitoring in B2B and B2C customer applications. We use the SaaS solution, with the instrumentation of machine agents (windows / Linux), introspection in JAVA code, and Oracle and MSSQL databases. Experience monitoring was also used in major web portals. There was the integration of alarms with incident openings and other monitoring tools. Several Dashboards were implemented with business metrics.

Pros

  • Business monitoring
  • Dashboards
  • Opening and closing incidents

Cons

  • Event correlation
  • Single agent for multiple applications
  • Machine agent performance

Most Important Features

  • Dashboards
  • Fine tuning of alarms
  • Escalation

Return on Investment

  • RAM upgrade because of the machine agent
  • Business performance view
  • Licensing cost
