Use Cases and Deployment Scope

SmartDeploy is generally used for application deployment in UAT and Prod enviornment for our projects. It is utilised to streamline and make deployment process easier and less complicated so as team can focus on only development and not release of the product. Also streamlining deployments makes Knowledge transfer for new team members fast and makes them efficient

Pros

  • Imaging of system to another system
  • application depolyment on server
  • system driver management and dependencies handling

Cons

  • Remote monitoring is useful but has some lagging and functionalities are not upfront to use , making it complicated for new users to be aware just by using the application
  • Windows migration was quite difficult in terms of updates of softwares to be migrated to new system
  • Integration with client systems can be tough as major usage of other softwares is done in most of client systems causing us difficulties to integrate with smart deploy on the same platform

Well suited scenarios :

One of the situations SmartDeploy helped immensly was in application deployment and management for our projects , making it and instant favorite for the deployment process. Also in one situation where we had a high flying app development which did'nt had much time to develop, deployment thorugh smart deploy made it quick and less involvement. Easier to understand major functionalities and onboard new projects.

Less appropriate scenarios:

We faced issues while utilising by DevOps team for monitoring every system for issue resolving in linux update on every employees system. This created alot of delay in every employees work front as systems were not working as expected.

SmartDeploy - Thoughts on Use for Deployment and Upgrade

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use SmartDeploy to lay new images on to new and existing PCs. We currently use it for all new PCs and are attempting to use it for Windows 7 to Windows 10 Upgrades. It allows us to maintain one Windows 10 image, instead of multiple images for multiple hardware configurations. We use the same base image for laptops, desktops, and all-in-one PCs.

Pros

  • It allows us to maintain only one image. Much less effort required than storing and maintaining multiple images.
  • LAN deployment works very well with few issues.

Cons

  • User migration from the management console does not work all that well. Many delays in the capture and deployment of user profiles.
  • Would like to see a user migration progress indicator to track progress.

Likelihood to Recommend

It works really well as an image maintenance and roll-out platform, allowing maintenance of a single "Gold" image.

New features allow the deployment of some software packages as part of image deployment.

It does not work very well as a maintenance platform in any use for us, but especially not well-suited for Windows 7 to Windows 10 migrations over WAN.
