RPort--an open-source tool I love

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

RPort is an open-source tool, which is an alternative to TeamViewer. I have used it for managing my Windows servers but it supports Linux and iOS as well. I find it pretty handy for executing predefined scripts as well as basic commands across multiple machines concurrently. It's very straightforward to set up. Developers are still building it and adding new features as we speak. Highly recommended.

Pros

  • Very secure and open source
  • No need for VPN and chained SSH connections
  • Its got a very nicely designed UI
  • Developers are adding a new features

Cons

  • I'd love to be able to save the output of commands/scripts executed
  • "Whats new in this release" feature

Likelihood to Recommend

If you are looking for an alternative to TeamViewer--a very secure tool with very little hassle to set up--this is it.

Streamline tasks with a complete network overview in one browser-based application

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Most of my customers have IT networks that contain both Linux- and Windows-based equipment. With just one tool, I can manage all network equipment from one interface.

Another great feature is that I can re-use all the custom scripts that I gathered over the years to automate operations. You can apply scripts on a single network node, clusters of nodes, or all nodes at the same time--a real time saver.

  • Manage both Linux and Windows equipment in one interface
  • Automation via scripts

Cons

  • Network monitoring tool is separate

Likelihood to Recommend

Ideally suited for SysAdmins that run networks with mixed equipment types (Windows and Linux). It will help to streamline your tasks by having a complete network overview in one browser-based application. This means that you can stay in control via your phone or mobile device, even while not at the office.
