Use Cases and Deployment Scope

PRTG Network Monitor helps us stay on top of our entire IT setup. We use it to monitor our network, a large number of Windows servers, branch offices, and critical business applications. It alerts us immediately if something goes wrong, helping us avoid downtime and quickly fix any issues. The main problems it solves are reducing unexpected outages, speeding up troubleshooting, and making sure we always know what's happening across our infrastructure. With PRTG, we can spot performance problems early, keep everything running smoothly, and keep our employees productive.

Pros

  • Proactive Alerts and Notifications
  • Comprehensive Server Monitoring
  • Centralized Branch Office Visibility

Cons

  • Scalability Constraints. PRTG Network Monitor's performance can degrade as the number of sensors increases, particularly beyond 5,000 sensors per installation.
  • Integration with Third-Party Platforms: We had challenges in integrating PRTG Network Monitor with i.e. Teams channnel notifications
  • Recent Licensing and Pricing Changes: In mid-2024, Paessler transitioned PRTG Network Monitor to a subscription-based licensing model, resulting in sudden tripled price increase for us. This shift, coupled with inadequate advance communication, could be substantially improved

Return on Investment

  • initial setup costs were considerably low. 14MD or so for less than 1000 sensors
  • in pre-2025 pricing model, the ROI was clear
