A good open source project manager.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

ProjectLibre is used by our IT department to manage our infrastructure and development projects. We've been using it for many years and best of all, the software is open source and compatible with our Windows 10 and Linux operating systems that our IT team uses in the office. The software allows us to go further and we have the routine of creating diagrams and different types of graphics to improve our management and control of micro activities within the projects of the areas. It has a friendly and intuitive interface and with a simple training it is possible to master all the features.

Pros

  • It supports Microsoft Project files.
  • Allows you to create Gantt Chart, PERT, Data Structure and other charts.
  • Friendly interface.
  • Allows you to export files to PDF.
  • Reports.
  • Manage IT department resources, as well as keep track of dates and deadlines.

Cons

  • I've had incidents of crashing and freezing of the screen a few times.

Likelihood to Recommend

ProjectLibre is very similar to Microsoft Project, but it is free. It has a user-friendly interface that is simple to understand and use. Best of all is its compatibility to import and export data to Project and PDF without any restriction. ProjectLibre is very important to execute medium and large scale projects that we develop. There is a possibility to create many diagrams, with Gantt and PERT being the most used by me. I feel like you don't lose anything to any paid competitor software

Great free/inexpensive alternative to Office, more functional than Google Sheets

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a free alternative to Microsoft office suite, ProjectLibre is more than sufficient for our business needs. With more functionality than Google sheets/docs/etc, it's a great in between option.

Pros

  • Spreadsheet functionality (better than Google sheets)
  • Desktop downloads (highly functional, not internet-dependant
  • Document formatting for printing

Cons

  • Some tools are difficult to find (different shortcuts than typical)
  • user interface isn't the prettiest or most intuitive (just takes some getting used to compared to Google alternatives)

Likelihood to Recommend

Great for complex spreadsheets, project roadmapping, and Gantt charts. Assigning tasks and responsibilities within a project is very easy. Spreadsheets are just as functional as Microsoft and can be copied over to other programs via csv.

Not as great for presentations or reports that require detailed visual/graphic design, doesn't have the same level of quality pre-formatted templates that other programs have.

ProjectLibre, the best free software to manage projects

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our company needed software to manage projects, times and requirements, without forgetting important activities and sequentialities. Our main problem was the inexperience, due by the fact that we had never used project management software. It was essential for us to find a simple tool, within everyone's reach that would allow us to organize the activities clearly and functionally.

Pros

  • Simplicity: tool easy to use
  • Functional: a software that does what we need
  • User friendly: excellent interface for all users

Cons

  • Change color to gantt bar
  • Project header title is missing
  • Data on the management of project costs

Likelihood to Recommend

In my opinion, ProjectLibre is recommended for all those who need a quick tool, easy to use and simple for the management of project activities, and its related dependence and priorities. It is less appropriate when looking for a software that manages project costs and other expenses data relative to an activity/project.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I do use the libre office as it is free and a great alternative to competitors like Microsoft and WPS Office which are in some way or the other paywalled. I am also a frequent user of libretorrent on my smartphone as it is by far the best P2P client I have come across.

Pros

  • Being Free.
  • Open source.
  • Suite of products.
  • Platform coverage.

Cons

  • Better UI
  • Platform coverage and feature parity.
  • Simultaneous support like Google docs and sheets.

Likelihood to Recommend

Project Libre is well suited for individuals who want to try cheaper alternatives to MS office since it is compatible with a wide range of file formats, including those used by popular office suites such as Microsoft Office. It offers a full suite of office tools, including a word processor, spreadsheet program, and presentation software, allowing users to complete a wide range of tasks without having to purchase additional software. And in the modern world, it has become very common for user tends to shift towards open source programs that are regularly updated and have transparency rather than tech owned by a Billion dollar company.

Great Project Planning

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

ProjectLibre was used as a tool for teaching students about project management softeare. ProjectLibre gave our students the chance to learn about a number of project related concepts including resource management, task management, project planning, lead/slack times and much more. Students were able to after, apply their learning to a case study and also develop project plans and Gantt charts for their own projects.

Pros

  • Project Planning
  • Resource Managment
  • Intuitive User Interface that aligns to other industry standard software
  • Good support and documentation

Cons

  • Niche features and customisation with view modes could be better.
  • Better compatibility with Microsoft Project (import/export)
  • Clearer and more intuitive steps for certain functions.

Likelihood to Recommend

ProjectLibre is well suited to developing proformas and gantt charts for initial project scoping. It works well where there is a clear understanding of the main steps etc. It can br used as a way of measuring overall project progress. ProjectLibre suffers in its versatility for a live project where tasks may be made impromptu and tasks are ill-defined.

Ok for simple projects

Rating: 1 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have ProjectLibre available in our company as cheap alternative to MS Project.

Pros

  • Cost efficient
  • Does adapt most simple functions of MS Project quite well

Cons

  • In general a bit buggy, had more than one crash
  • Doesn't have the features of a professional project management tool
  • Missing especially VBA scripting

Likelihood to Recommend

Is can be used for simple projects if a professional tool is not available.

I wouldn't recommend it for more complex projects.

Your only (and best) choice in cross-platform MS Project-like PM software.

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

ProjectLibre was used to support cross-platform usage of project management tools in tracking and managing various projects within our organization. Primarily we use PM software to track and plan projects annually with overarching programs that coordinate smaller projects beneath.

Pros

  • Cloud-based platform (beta)
  • Familiar interface - exactly like MS Project
  • Free and open source
  • Cross-platform - Mac and Linux support

Cons

  • The UI is a bit dated
  • It's more inline with Project 2009 but the core functionalities are all there
  • Full cloud offering would be great

Likelihood to Recommend

If you have multiple users on different platforms, and you need MS Project connectivity, ProjectLibre is really your only option. The cloud beta is very powerful as a single-source deployment but until that's available outside of beta, you are best to use ProjectLibre along side instances of MS Project. Depending on your user, the project files can be easily shared and stored centrally and collaborated on (not simultaneously).

Cost effective PM tool

Rating: 6 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

My team and I use ProjectLibre for the following -

1) Access project plan created using MS Projects - MS Projects license is expensive and we cannot have all users assigned one. This is where ProjectLibre comes in

2) User interface is simple and friendly. It hardly takes anytime for anyone to get go with it

3) Printing options are friendly too - you are able to adjust paper sizes, timescales, etc.

Pros

  • Creating Project plans are painless
  • There are loads of printing customizations one can do
  • Update frequencies are good

Cons

  • Customer service is not there - I understand that the product is open source but some kind of forum with FAQs, etc. can come in handy
  • App crashes at time for no reason. There have been instances where you try to create a new task and all the diagrams and other items get messed up

Likelihood to Recommend

When you decide to use this, we need to keep in mind that this is an open source platform. While you can put in a request feature, there is no guarantee you will get it.

If you rely on Customer service, this is something that is almost non-existent (considering it is open source, it is not fair to expect one)

ProjectLibre - a great value at no cost!

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As an IT Management instructor, I use ProjectLibre (open source) to show my students an efficient way to manage their projects. I have also used ProjectLibre to manage my own projects in Language Development and Translation. In my opinion, ProjectLibre is easier to use than MS Project; yet ProjectLibre can be used to open MS Project files.

Pros

  • Task Assignment and Accountability
  • Tracking Tasks throughout the life of project
  • Excellent visual representation of project progress

Cons

  • Translation into KiSwahili and other African languages of wider communication would be great.
  • It's great to be able to open an MS Project file, but I'd love to be able to change my work back to an MS Project file when I'm done.
  • It's hard not to compare ProjectLibre with MS Project because it really does have a lot of the same functionality. However, I wish the user interface was a bit more appealing and intuitive. Still, this is not a serious drawback.

Likelihood to Recommend

As a project management tool, especially with more straightforward timelines and components, ProjectLibre is a great alternative to some of the costly PM software tools. I have managed many projects with both MS Project and ProjectLibre, and I think ProjectLibre is a great alternative, especially when I've worked in regions of the world where users cannot afford other PM tools.

ProjectLibre - Perfect For Those Focused on the Work

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have to start this with a caveat because, if we had been able to get past a personal hurdle, I would have pushed for its use in the company I consulted with everyone. We approached it in the hopes of managing several employees, as well as the timeline of their work. Previously, the company used Excel and Sheets (Google Drive) (more on this in a bit). It addresses the complications of time management for those who are number-resistant; ie - more visually friendly.

Pros

  • Visual management of time!
  • Realistic management (multiple projects at once because not all projects operate independently of others where time is concerned).
  • Data handling - reports, etc...

Cons

  • I will get into this more, but comparisons. Comparison is the evil twin of this program.

Likelihood to Recommend

You have to come in without bias and looking forward to embracing a new program. That sounds a bit biased myself, yes, but this program would have been perfect for the organization I consulted with. Absolutely perfect. But out of twelve individuals, only one had an open mind and wanted to explore the program. The remainder saw the program and said "Oh, it's like Excel, I'll just use that instead..." because they knew Excel. ProjectLibre is FUNCTION-centric, not pretty for the sake of being pretty. Once you get into it, you will fall in and love it. If you know marketing automation software, you will know how to use this program. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to manage their time visually, in a program that is built to be what they need and not just something that looks good on a second monitor when the boss walks in.
