Usability of Pitchbook for Management Consultants

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Pitchbook is useful in competitor benchmarking, it's useful in finding revenues and deals made by an unlisted company, moreover you can also find the latest valuation at which they raised money and the name of the investors. Additionally, they have companies listed by industries and you can apply various filters including revenue size, HQ Location, industry, ownership, etc. to narrow down your list

Pros

  • Revenue
  • Ownership
  • Key People to reach out to
  • Deals (Acquisitions or funding)
  • If the company has been rebranded or not?

Cons

  • Revenue is outdated for some companies; 5 years old revenue doesn't help much
  • Ability to filter by company function, for example, there is no filter for GovTech
  • All revenue is automatically converted to USD, would be helpful to get the revenue in company's native currency

Return on Investment

  • Used it for business development
  • Useful in finding Key People of large-scale PE firms
  • Time savings due to M&As and funding available

PitchBook review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Searches for funds investing in certain spaces, searches for startups in certain spaces. Looking up the amount and kinds of funding startups have received. PitchBook is generally my first stop when looking up a company. Their customer service is very fast too.

Pros

  • customer service responsiveness
  • comprehensiveness; it has information on most companies I look at

Cons

  • market sizing, industry reports
  • improved searching for specific industries - I have to spend a lot of time crafting the right and/or combination of keywords
  • sometimes it has no information on a company

Return on Investment

  • More time efficient than looking up the information on other sources

Usability

Contributes to cost saving by making our campaigns more targeted

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We run full funnel marketing campaigns on behalf major IT and Software vendors.
Part of the process is knowing how to prioritise accounts to target.
Several of the metrics we use to help us with this are Revenue Growth & Funding Status.
We also use the funding notes and company description provided to analyse the the top priorities within an account.
These data points are accumulated and contribute to a propensity score.
We also are able to use the funding status to find other IT Vendors for us to approach directly about new marketing campaigns.

Pros

  • Details Funding Information
  • Revenue Growth
  • Account Description
  • Account Classification

Cons

  • Company Revenue is often blank
  • Sometimes there's discrepancy between revenue and funding that doesn't make sense

Return on Investment

  • Fit's happily in our data budget
  • Helps to pull in new clients for us to work on

PitchBook A for Private Company Data

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It’s our go-to for quick valuation work... public comps, precedent transactions, deal multiples, and who paid what in similar situations. For market work, we track sector trends, build benchmarks, and slice the universe by size, geography, and business model. Screening is helpful: we can find a list of strategic and PE buyers, then grab real contact info (emails and phone numbers)

Pros

  • Private company data
  • customer support
  • Contact info

Cons

  • Data source
  • Verified contacts
  • Public market data

Return on Investment

  • This is impossible to quantify in our business. The data is excellent and I haven't seen a replacement
