Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Taking quick notes or lists where I just need a note with no particular organisation. Especially useful for part numbers or as a quick list of things to investigate/look into/fix.

I also use it as an editor for markup languages like yaml.

Notepad++ is incredibly simple and fast, and is therefore suited to simple and fast tasks. I would not recommend it for writing complex code (use a proper environment) or text where things need to be linked (use Word). It is great for just writing quick lists or taking notes to be written up at the end of a meeting.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Mostly developers use Notepad++. It is a great text editor for developers. I also keep notes about ongoing projects there. Many developers use the multi-tab option, and we like selection of columns.

Pros

Multiple tabs open at once
Column selection for find/replace is very useful for developers
Auto-Save is really handy
Convert case
Predictive typing
Colors for different parts of code (language vs variables)

Cons

Nothing, this is a great product as is

[Notepad++ is] perfect for developers who need multi-language support and column selection. Much lighter/less overhead than Visual Studio. Also great for pre-composing an email.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Currently we are using Notepad++ as a code editor to build xsl stylesheets for a new peace of electronic data interchange software. It is currently being used by the information technology department. It has completely replaced the windows built in notepad for our team as it is so flexible. It mainly addresses flexibility when working with different file types.

Notepad++ is an excellent program to help any person working with different file types or even a programmer of some sorts. It is a great code editor. It is also great with working with different file types like JSON and XML files. The ability to add plugins into Notepad++ makes formatting code and file types into human readable formats.

Notepad++ is the tool of choice for code writers in our organization's Information Services/Information Technology department. It is used as an initial editor for writing and editing all types of content (e.g., emails, documents); as a tool to strip away formatting from content; and as a simple alternative to an Integrated Development Environment for performing functions such as formatting SQL code.

Pros

It offers more functionality than other text editors such as Notepad without overburdening the user experience.
Using the add-in manager, it is easy to reformat code, such as SQL, to follow a code format standard for readability.
It has a simple "IntelliSense"-like feature to make it easy to retype words that have already been used in the same file.

Cons

Actually, there isn't much I would like to see Notepad++ do differently.
One of its strengths is that it is a simple application and I wouldn't want to see that changed by adding a lot to the basic feature set.
The application can be extended, somewhat, to meet more particular needs through the use of add-ons.

Likelihood to Recommend

I recommend Notepad++ to people all of the time, whether they are tech workers or not. I find it helps sometimes with writing to have a simple interface, sort of like a blank canvas, in order to capture content without having formatting options to distract me. I also heavily rely on Notepad++ for restructuring content to make it easier to read, interpret, and edit.

Notepad++ is used across the organization. It has been installed as the de facto editor in place of Microsoft Notepad. It has been installed as part of our standard server image and is installed on all laptops and servers across the organization. We use Notepad ++ as a much better version of notepad for editing all sorts of different types of files.

Pros

Notepad ++ is excellent with XML.
Notepad ++ is great with JSON.
Notepad ++ is great for debugging web service payloads.

Cons

Notepad++ could work better with XML out of the box, you need to install an add on.
The upgrade nag is annoying, it would be nice if it went away after dismissing.
Sometimes the plugins don't install properly.

Likelihood to Recommend

Notepad ++ excels at formatting and displaying text. This is especially helpful when debugging web service payloads. This allows us to quickly and easily see the issues in the payload no matter the format—XML or JSON. Notepad ++ also works well with non-standard character sets. We have a number of Chinese and Japanese character sets that we work with as well.

My company provides engineering consulting services to clients who want industrial processes automated or systems automatically tested. We mainly use LabVIEW to do the software development but also interface with a wide variety of hardware and software. In order to persist settings we store a lot of data in XML, txt, ini, and custom files that can all be loaded into a text editor. We have standardized on Notepad++ because it is a free and powerful text editor that does a lot of organizing for these types of files that Microsoft built-in tools do not, which saves us a lot of effort.

Pros

Parsing XML files and simple text code structures.
You can have multiple files open in a single window.
There are a lot of advanced features such as encoding and macro support.

Cons

I'm sure there's a setting for this but I get notified of updates nearly every time I use the software.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you use a text editor, then Notepad++ should be your first go-to. It's free and seems to be the industry standard tool. They make improvements all the time and it's far more useful than the Microsoft Notepad tool. It's also a great simple tool for viewing configuration files like XML or ini.

It's not being used by the organization as whole or the department as a whole but it is used by our developers on a individual basis. It solves problems on a individual level. When we have to manipulate text data and text files or debug code that isn't supported by a IDE we use Notepad++.

Pros

Text Manipulation - You can easily edit and reorganize large sets of text. It's an amazing text editor.
Plug in Support - There are so many plugins. My favorite is the difftool. Takes two files and shows you were the differences are in each one.
Multiple Language Support - Supports the syntax for many languages, some that don't have IDE support like Visual Studio. Helps with writing code.

Cons

Stability - It can be buggy and when it crashes it can often be only remedied by reinstalling it. I've had to do that a number of times.
Add-In Quality - It appears that some add-ins aren't up to snuff as the other add-ins are. They too can cause Notepad++ to crash.
Appearance - It just appears outdated, not really a big deal.

Likelihood to Recommend

You get a text file and you need add commas in a column, it can do that for you rather easily. Let's say some code behind has changed and you don't have source control. You can take a old version of a file and the new one and use the diff tool to see what changed. That fact that it supports languages like Python and can help debug HTML is a huge help. I can't really name one scenario cause Notepad++ is like a Swiss Army Knife for developers.

I use Notepad++ as my daily editor for quickly opening an editor and taking notes. I also use Notepad++ when editing text files which are generally in the 1 MB to 3 MB size range. I believe Notepad++ is widely used throughout my organization as it is free, easy to use and has a very low footprint both in CPU usage and resources.

Pros

Notepad++ loads very quickly
Notepad++ provides a much desired simplified toolbar
Notepad++ provides built-in support for dozens of software development languages, all at no cost

Cons

The macro editor in Notepad++ is virtually non-existent. Be sure to get your macro right the first time, or you'll be recording it again
Notepad++ macro playback is inconsistent in its accuracy. For instance, my macro does a full line delete 7 times. However, upon macro playback, it often only deletes the first line
Notepad++ does not easily provide a text editing view showing column positions across the top of the window. The column position is shown at the bottom which does not allow one to quickly and easily navigate to a specific column

Likelihood to Recommend

For the price of FREE, you simply can't beat Notepad++ for your daily editing...unless of course, you are editing files greater than about 350 MB. Also, if you are recording sophisticated, detailed macros, you will find the lack of a sufficient macro editor very frustrating. Keep in mind, if you need a fast, robust text editor for daily usage, Notepad++ is more than sufficient.
