Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use NetApp for snapshots, snap vaults and snap mirrors. This is our preferred method for resolving our issues around ensuring we have quick and easy access to "older versions" of data. It is far quicker than the traditional method of backing up data. We use this solely to protect client data.

Pros

Takes very quick copies of data.
Ensures easy access.

Cons

A better user interface as some things still have to be with command line.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is well suited to take hourly copies of data due to how quickly it does this. So far example, data that is used by multiple users at multiple times of the day is easy to present to the user if they make a mistake. It can be quickly recovered and also means the users can self-remediate.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We leverage NetApp's SnapMirror at both the volume level and full SVM level for our NAS & SAN workloads for disaster recovery between multiple datacenters and Cloud locations. All of our NetApp storage systems are set up to use SnapMirror to help protect our data between sites for a really fast and reliable recovery option.

Pros

Ease of use.
Reliable.
Efficient.

Cons

Integrate with other technology providers.
Improve the initial Synch Process.
Make custom schedule creation easier.

Likelihood to Recommend

NetApp SnapMirror has been used in our specific environment for a very long time and is well suited for implementing quick and seamless recovery point objectives and vaulting data for required periods of time as well. I would not recommend leveraging SnapMirror as your only disaster recovery solution as it is not intended to be an enterprise solution sole DR posture.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Well from my perspective we provide end-to-end support for NetApp Snapmirror. Troubleshooting issues like snapshot policy on the source and SnapMirror policy on destination( i.e. DR site). Currently, we have a large customer base and we have overhauled around 500+ SnapMirror relations this year. Response of business is quite spectacular.

Pros

It's a data protection Technology.
Highly stable.
Replicates read only backup copies from source to DR.

Cons

Cascade SnapMirror.
Broader bandwidth.
High resiliency.

Likelihood to Recommend

Response time is quite good. It is very easy to set up and use. Also, the filesystem which manages the snapshots work on your WAFL that is re-direct on write. Highly stable and efficient. There are very few or no scenarios where we have faced a customer complaint related to NetApp SnapMirror. Customers were quite satisfied with this DR solution.

NetApp SnapMirror Makes Creating Backups a Snap

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

NetApp SnapMirror is being used in our environment as a disaster recovery tool. We use it to mirror NetApp volumes from one filer to another one in a remote location. This ensures that we have a relatively current (depending on SnapMirror schedules) backup of the volume in another location in the event that our main NetApp filer is unavailable.

Pros

Setting up SnapMirror and SnapMirror partners is extremely easy.
Monitoring the SnapMirror volumes is extremely easy in the System Manager GUI.

Cons

The volume size on the destination partner always has to be bigger than the source. This can get annoying. Not sure if they have made this automatic in future releases.
When you break a SnapMirror to use the destination volume you have to redirect all requests to the new volume. This isn't really a con but it is something you need to think about.

Likelihood to Recommend

NetApp SnapMirror is a no-brainer when it comes to retaining an offsite backup for disaster recovery purposes. The backbone of the product is the Snapshot technology built into NetApp technology. In my experience, the Snapshot/SnapMirror software has been flawless and very dependable. The only piece that I can see adding in the future is potentially connecting SnapMirror to the cloud as an additional backup destination.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It is being used for Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity by our the whole organization. We are a Health Care Co. SnapMirror in conjunction with VMWare SRM to provide failover and testing of our critical production as well as test virtual servers and applications. NetApp SnapMirror also helps us address the issue of backing up systems and recovery within 4 hours RTO and provides faster RPO. We are a long-term customer with over 5 years of experience with NetApp in production and development at our company.

Pros

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity are strong areas where NetApp SnapMirror exceeds by providing multiple recovery options without the need for additional software or degrading network performance.

Cons

Pro: Stability in storage we have had these in place for 3 years and besides a failed disk, there have been no issues.
Pro: Replication options are pretty good
Pro: Storage Provisioning as well as a wealth of features that are an additional add-on for competitors
Cons: Support is lacking in customer service and being proactive of system alerts and errors
Cons: the Learning curve. Easy to make mistakes using the user interface as it does lack functionality.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is ideal for small and large organizations that have a variety of different business scenarios and locations regarding disparate IT System and complex BCDR Plans. It is flexible and can grow. Once you get past the initial learning curve and user interface, it is a rock solid and dependable solution.
