NetApp's ONTAP Data Management Software is a storage and data management and protection solution. ONTAP 9 allows users to build an intelligent hybrid cloud that is the foundation of a NetApp Data Fabric that spans flash, disk, and cloud. Flexibly deploy storage on a choice of architectures—hardware storage systems, software-defined storage (SDS), and the cloud—while unifying data management across all of them.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use NetApp ONTAP Data Management Software to manage our VMware datastores, CIFS Servers, and iSCSI-connected LUNs on our SQL Servers. We also use OnTAP as a key component of our disaster recovery plan.

Ever since GUI updates made several years ago, there is reduced functionality in some areas

Return on Investment

The amount of storage we need for the same amount of content has decreased significantly over time due to enormous improvements in efficiency software.
The amount of CPU/memory required has decreased as well, which will allow us to replace with a less powerful system.
The physical footprint of NetApp equipment has shrunk significantly, using less resources in the datacenter. We've gone from 4 racks of equipment to 1/2 of one rack over the last 15 years.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use 2 NetApp storage arrays at two different locations, that are synchronised in case of power or network failure at one location, we use Snap mirror to that provides asynchronous data replication between our two locations. The feature set on the hardware and Ontap OS provides the tools and features to make sure our IT infrastructures upside is as close as possible to 100%.

Cons

Feature rich Cli but some features are missing from the UI
Lack of tools in UI compared to CLI
SnapMirror management from UI can be temperamental and as in previous points CLI is better.

Return on Investment

Lower cost of storage due to the high rate of deduplication and compression.
The disaster recovery and data protection solutions have helped prevent ransomware and data loss.
NetApp have fantastic customer support if you need to contact them regarding an issue.
