What is Monetate?

Monetate (formerly Kibo Personalization, powered by Monetate and Certona) is an ecommerce personalization software for consumer-facing brands. Monetate enables brands to create individualized experiences for site visitors, with the goal of improving engagement and business performance. Founded in 2008, Monetate services Adidas, Lufthansa, Office Depot, Reebok, Wolseley, and other companies.

AB testing and personalization platform for B2C or B2B With powerfulness comes a bit of complexity. Not necessarily a fault on the Monetate side, but it's just how it is. However, it takes quite a bit to get used to the UI and really make the most of the options.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

After using Monetate for quite some time now, I can safely recommend it for A/B testing as well as a ton of other really cool additional features. It has personalized search, product recommendations, journey analysis and a bunch of other really cool features. Depending on what you implement, there will be a little learning curve, but the team is very dedicated to guiding and hands-on help, throughout the process. It's easy to see the wins and it's hyper fast for putting new marketing in place, with or without a test component. I highly recommend.

We use Monetate as our AB testing and site optimization tool on the website. We test a wide variety of things, from simple creative copy tests to apps and personalization elements. We also use it to run targeted experiences for promotions and new product releases. We look to Monetate to help measure the effectiveness of different elements on the site and see how various layouts, creative, and copy can impact our conversion rate and bottom line.

Monetate is used to create personalized web experiences for users visiting our site and to make product recommendations. Monetate allows us to show relevant web content to users based on their location, interests, weather patterns, etc.

Pros

  • The user interface is easy to navigate.
  • Their customer support is great, they will help us to troubleshoot and work through issues whenever we need.
  • Monetate was easy to integrate to our site.

Cons

  • There is a flashing effect when personalized experiences are rendered on the front end, which is not preferred.
  • Behavior based personalization is difficult to set up/currently unavailable.
  • Item recommendations are not always relevant.

Return on Investment

  • Ability to show relevant content to users based on weather in their area.
  • Ability to show relevant item recommendations to users, resulting in increased add-to-cart rate.

We often perform A/B testing of copy and campaigns to see what generates more user acquisition or retention. As an example, we could be testing what generates more orders, free product with orders or % discounts with orders and we use Monetate to test something like that. Monetate provides great fixed KPI monitoring to help us make decisions on which test is more successful, even multivariate tests, to help us pick the best option to default.
