Communication with the whole team and subteams. Integration with other tools and software like GitLab. Arranging appointments and small planning of to-dos in Mattermost Boards. Possibility of self-hosting/on-premise hosting.
Pros
easy setup
customization
privacy focused
multi platforms
Cons
more integrations
bigger focus on selfhosting
Likelihood to Recommend
Small and medium-sized teams that need a communication and meeting arranging tool with the possibility to integrate external tools or want to customize their chat platform very specific. Also, when teams need custom plugins / integrations for their work, it is easy to develop the integrations themselves, because of the good documentation and open-source project.

We use Mattermost as a communication tool for the entire organization. Management can send a message to the entire organization using an "Announcements" channel that all employees are auto-subscribed to. Additionally, we have channels for each specialty area within the company. HR created a channel for people to "Ask HR Anything". Members of a team can create their own channels and manage their own members. I find it intuitive and dare I say fun to use.
Pros
Intuitive interface.
Easy to create channels.
Mobile and Desktop apps let you stay connected anywhere.
Cons
Would be nice to be able to arrange pinned posts.
Would be great to have a NOTES section per channel for links, phone numbers, text blocks, etc.

Mattermost is suited well to a medium-sized or bigger organization. I find it much more enjoyable to use than Teams. However, a smaller company can get away with a less robust option. I've found it very useful as a tool to communicate with knowledge centers throughout our company. Anyone can join a channel and ask a question of the group. This feature creates a feeling of community within a largely remote workforce.

Initially, our staff was using commercial products specifically for chats and collaboration, but they were paid basically. We were charged per user. However, I found out Mattermost. They give self-hosted solutions (Mattermost open source), and it has features that could be purchased based on different requirements. Most of our needs are satisfied with the open-source version.
The main purpose of using it was security concerns. We wanted our data to be only to us, on-premises. So this satisfied the use case to have Mattermost self-hosted on our corporate rack. To date, we have been using it among our staff without any trouble. Mattermost has good options to backup data (store) on cloud platforms too. Also, our use cases consist of DevOps components integration which are satisfied (notifications) from our Jenkins Infrastructure. It has good simplicity of use, so I'll recommend it over other self-hosted chat solutions to anybody.
Pros
Simplicity of use
Integrations
Data storage connections for backup purpose or storing media
Really good administration of users and sake of control
DevOps friendly across IT team
Cons
Some of the features in paid plans could be free, however, they have much offered in free plan (self-hosted)
The Desktop App we use on windows has some bugs, like when Mattermost is down and comes back up, the app needs restart

I'll recommend going for Mattermost if your use case is DevOps, integrations, internal organisation chat solution. Mattermost has the option to backup data also in cloud platforms. There is huge simplicity of use for teams. Our organisation uses it seamlessly without any hassle. For having remote teams, we can even host their product ourselves over any cloud platform for high availability. Also, we can do purchase upgrades there as per needs.
We used Mattermost for our between-the-teams communication in the company. A very useful tool, intuitive, and easy to get used to. Had all the features you may need. Another option was Diego, but when I joined, they had been worst using Mattermost for a while and I did like it a lot. Very nice interface and all the features for a proficient commun9 and interaction with people.
Pros
GUI is ready to get used to
Perfect notifications
Has all the features you may need to talk to anyone
Web interface
Cons
Not sure I have complaints about it.
I don't remember when something didn't work.

This tool is great for secure communication between the company employees. You can sign in using Okta, which is what we used at Kessel Run (through Concept Solutions). It's an air force, so you can assume we needed good tools.
We use Mattermost for our daily tasks, day-to-day discussions, issues we face in our technologies, and ask for solutions from our colleagues of different departments as well. Various features of Mattermost make it amazing to get everything in one place. We also share our achievements here to get them noticed by other teammates.
Pros
The system console feature to manage all users.
Different groups can be formed easily and the privacy is amazing.
Flexibility to post big images, attachments is really cool.
Cons
The options we look for should be more easily available with a change in its interface.
Group deletion is still a big task. It should be easily available to all users.

It is an amazing platform where we can interact with our fellow workers and can share our achievements, laughs, issues to get a solution, suggestions, discussions, etc. The multiple options of Mattermost help us achieve our tasks in an easy manner. In an organization, whether it is big or small, features of Mattermost help us to interact with any department colleagues in a professional and approachable manner.
We have internal private talks that we do not want to share or expose all this information on public servers, so we use Mattermost internally and also we are using Mattermost for some teams. The beauty of Mattermost is that you can host on your personal servers.
Pros
Messages.
Playbooks.
Boards.
Cons
CI/CD.
Integrations.
Project Management.

If you're looking for a replacement for Slack it is a good choice. It is cheaper and makes more sense.
Mattermost is being used across an entire organization; however, it enables us to keep multiple workgroups in sync with each other and formulate best approach methods to tackle various problems that arise both internally and externally to the organization. We have geographically diverse individuals working within cross-spectrum workgroups to address problems that span vertically.
Pros
Mattermost has an excellent mobile client.
Mattermost has very fast & reliable instant messaging features.
Mattermost integrates to other systems we use such as Big Blue Button.
Cons
Mattermost has some issues with its messaging system.
Mattermost's code is not straightforward for developing customizations.
Likelihood to Recommend
I believe that Mattermost is one of a family of best of breed applications that we rely on. If someone were to ask me about Mattermost, I would have no trouble recommending it for their needs because it has been able to do for us what we had hoped for. We had tried other applications that touted similar features, but Mattermost was the first one we tried that actually delivered on those expectations.
