As a technology and marketing consultant I've had several opportunities to help my clients choose and set up direct mailing systems. I always recommend Intuit Mailchimp and most of my clients agree. It's quick and easy to set up and start sending out effective emails.
In most cases we've uploaded existing customers and also used the Intuit Mailchimp sign-up forms.
We've also done most of the graphics and creation of content for the emails. Using templates and saving templates save a lot of time and helps us to present a consistent look.
Pros
Easy to segment users in the database
Great reporting and review of campaigns
Helpful tools to build new campaigns and set up updated ones
Good templates and forms
Cons
In the years I've been using Intuit Mailchimp, they've updated their platform quite a bit. Any problems I had early on are now addressed and fixed.

My usage has been mostly with small businesses and Intuit Mailchimp has been a great solution. I can't speak to the scalability to a million users for example but none of my clients have moved away from Intuit Mailchimp.

Intuit Mailchimp is an industry leader in-terms of email marketing communications and data management, if you are a SME business I would highly recommend using it as it does meet pretty much every need. If you are a larger organisation or enterprise business and you want a more sophisticated tool and more advanced features for email marketing then I suggest looking at some other tools, but Intuit Mailchimp is basically the place to start for all businesses that need email marketing.

We use it for, as most businesses do, to send out mass email blasts to our clients at different times to let them know what is new in their industry, specials we are running, and how we can help them. Yes, it is an effective tool for sending out a message to a large group of folks quickly - and to make sure that the message is the same. Is it instant? No, but at least you can tailor a good message to that segment of your client base.
Pros
Communicate out to large groups
On trend with look, and feel - emails don't look dated
Ability to add photos and video to messages
Tailor message to different segments
Cons
You can add videos, but it's still a bit clunky
Photo integration could improve - feels a bit templated
I would like to see a bit more ease of using different lists for sends, and perhaps better merge options
Likelihood to Recommend
It's well suited for getting a message out to segments of your audience that you wish to reach in a very precise way. There isn't a lot of options for variance - and I'm not saying that is bad, because you are using Intuit Mailchimp to get the same message out to a wide variety of clients and customers - but it is going to be a general message, and one not tailored to every client.
We use Intuit Mailchimp to send email blasts and also collect emails for various segments. Starting to use the SMS options as well. The ability to send to specific lists with specific filters and rules is ideal.
Pros
List segments
Analytics
Clean email design
Cons
Customer service via phone
Allow more emails to be sent monthly
Likelihood to Recommend
I think Intuit Mailchimp is best suited for mass email marketing and deploy. Not sure that it is a great tool for CRM.
We're an agency and regularly use Mailchimp for our client's newsletters. It's simple to use, has a great email builder, and is a powerful tool for most of what our clients need.
Pros
Great drag and drop email builder producing beautiful emails
Easy to use list management
Simple backend and management of team
Cons
Could be more robust in terms of automation at its basic levels
CRM is not as detailed as is sometimes needed for what we're doing
Likelihood to Recommend
I would recommend Mailchimp for anyone looking for a simple newsletter, or wanting to send regular communication to a relatively static or simply layered list. I would not recommend it if they are more robust eCommerce businesses or need super detailed automation and segmentation, at least beyond a smaller size of list.
We used Mailchimp for email marketing over several years.
Pros
Getting signed up is easy
Has good templates out of the box
Cons
Designing custom templates
Navigating the account
Likelihood to Recommend
Mailchimp is a great email marketing tool. Our issues with the platform relate to how difficult it is to close your account when ready. Not only is there not a clear way to cancel your account, you cannot close your account if you have contacts in the platform even if you are not sending emails. In my experience, customer support is not helpful when you are trying to close your account. There was very little documentation on how to close the account and what was required to close the account.
We're a market research organization who uses Mailchimp to communicate with our database of research participants. We send out updates concerning new or upcoming research projects, we send out newsletters and information update requests. We often use outside software for our surveys but when they are not complicated, we'll launch surveys within the platform and then use the reporting capabilities within Mailchimp.
Pros
Mailchimp makes it easy to maintain a clean database.
It's very user-friendly for designing campaigns.
It's easy to link email campaigns to social media campaigns.
Cons
Address field should be optional. You should be allowed to enter just a city or zip code and not have to enter a character for every possible field.
Training and help videos would be nice.
Less prompting to upgrade your account.
Likelihood to Recommend
Mailchimp is well suited to staying in contact with a database of people who have opted in to receiving communication from you. It is not well suited to cold email outreach.
I use Mailchimp with some of my website/startup projects because of its generous free plan. It gives me plenty of space to build up my email lists before committing to a plan. It's easy to use, and the dashboards and user interfaces are super easy to use for marketers or even those brand-new to email marketing.
As of now, we use Mailchimp for its list management, signup forms, welcome emails, and basic newsletters.
Pros
Easy to use
Generous free plan
Pretty campaigns and templates
Cons
Too many features
Scope far beyond email marketing
Pricey for small campaigns
Likelihood to Recommend
Mailchimp is perfect for small businesses that want to scale their email lists and get started with email marketing. However, it tries hard to be a one-stop-shop for everything, but it really only does email marketing exceptionally well—the rest is "meh," which means it really should just be an email tool, and you'll need to use other tools to supplement the rest of your marketing needs.
I use Mailchimp for newsletters promoting our design firm services, updates, and Case studies. We can deliver mail with our design to a database that we can filter into different audiences.
Pros
easily integrates HTML design we have created
custom templates saving
campaign setting is user friendly
segmentation
Cons
Contact import from CVS or Excel files as fields don't match that easily
Add features for free or low-price plans
IA to import contacts smartly
Likelihood to Recommend
SUITED If you need to have an organized database to send emails to regularly. If you seek design flexibility. If you want robust analytics.
INAPPROPIATE If your budget is too low If your database can be handled manually (as per its small size)
Mailchimp is a fine email marketing platform if you want to implement simple email marketing. Things like simple newsletters or basic autoresponders. As soon as you start getting into more complex automation, Mailchimp is lacking. The journey builder doesn't have enough branching ability or trigger abilities, and the automation that can be built is relatively basic.
Pros
Email Marketing.
Auto-Responders.
Integration
Cons
Automation Journeys.
Attribution Tracking.

Mailchimp is a great tool for basic email marketing. It is affordable and doesn't break the bank. For small businesses that are simply looking to send a monthly newsletter, Mailchimp is a great option. For anyone looking for a more integrated tech stack solution, there are better tools out there.
