Lavu works well for small companies.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We started with Lave as our POS system for both the cafe and event services within our establishment. After the cafe closed, we continued to use Lavu for our events. Lavu is used to ring up customer tabs at events and helps me as an accountant know how much in sales we received per type of item sold. I personally started with Lavu on the front end with ringing people up and now use it more on the back end with reporting.

Pros

  • Ease of setting up, editing, and deleting menu items.
  • Tracking employee hours
  • General reporting

Cons

  • Customer service
  • Reconciling between all tablets and backend reports. Occasionally receipts go missing and are difficult to track down.
  • Inventory

Most Important Features

  • Quick simple way to ring up guests
  • Ability to track sales
  • Ability to track employee hours

Return on Investment

  • Lavu does a great job tracking sales but has not helped in calculating accurate net income on sales with the lack of a good inventory system.

Alternatives Considered

Square POS

Lavu doubles as a business tool and a teaching module.

Pros

  • The Lavu system is incredibly easy to use in both front and back of house operations. The format of both sides is very intuitive.
  • Lavu makes it very easy to add real life application to teaching inventory control, schedule control, etc.
  • The fact that it is cloud based makes life much easier. I can make changes on the fly and they update very quickly.

Cons

  • The only issue I have had with Lavu is that when my IT department makes changes our filters make it difficult to edit/update the system. Lavu's technical help has always been great.

Return on Investment

  • LAVU has fit perfectly into both the business and teaching usage areas for me. I feel I got an extra return on investment.

Looking Glass has mixed feelings on Lavu

Pros

  • Setting up menu items in POS
  • User-friendly once everything is loaded
  • Easy to make changes to menu items on the fly from any mobile device
  • Initial training

Cons

  • Split check credit card transactions, seem to have issues with some of the checks not closing out properly or being charged correctly
  • Servers being allowed to run server summary even though they have unpaid checks (not supposed to happen)
  • Have had the system go out on a weekend and took 20 plus minutes to get back online
  • Calling the help desk on the weekend is a joke, takes 45 to 90 minutes to get help

Return on Investment

  • It was easy to set up and train new staff
  • They have a lot of bugs that cause billing issues
  • They told me the system could do things that actually couldn't be done (we need to manage usage by beer name and the system can't track them).
