Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The IBM Storage FlashSystems (FS5300) we have in our organisation are primarily used for migrations. we currently have a few running with PBR migrating data from Germany to the Netherlands to a non customer location as a last resort copy.

Easy to use
low latency, high performance

lost of possibilities to connect host (FC, etc 10/25Gbe, etc....

Cons

deduplication (mainly for the check in the box)

ability to add host port in PBHA environment

the IBM Storage FlashSystem FS5300 is a 1U system with very low power consumption.

that said it also has high performance with low latency, lost of possibilities to connect host, ideal for migration purposes in a environment were is little space and power.

We originally started using IBM Storage FlashSystem for our VDIs. Our initial VDI storage we replaced with IBM Storage FlashSystem lacked the speed we needed to have the local computer feel applied to our VDIs. The IBM Storage FlashSystem keeps our storage latency extremely low making our users experience within their VDIs so much better. The difference was night and day. The IBM Storage FlashSystem was easy to manage and scale up all with great redundancy. We then made the decision to purchase additional IBM Storage FlashSystem for our production file storage and remote backup solution. The replication policies are very easy to setup and maintain. In order to save time and make the transition from our old file server storage to the new IBM units, we copied all the files locally and then moved the DR replication to our offsite and started the sync. All went as expected. As far as maintenance, firmware updates are easily applied and can be done without any downtime.

Pros

Extremely fast storage
Scales up as needed. Add flash core modules easily and increase volumes very quickly.
Applying firmware updates to IBM Storage FlashSystem is very easy to do and can be done without any downtime.
Replication policies are very versatile and also easy to setup.

Cons

While the GUI does a pretty good job at simplifying most things. Expanding storage in a volume, you have to remove a volume from a group before you can expand. There may be a reason for this, but would love the option for it to do that task for you.

Likelihood to Recommend

IBM Storage FlashSystems are well suited as VDI storage for Citrix XenServer environments. Our Xen VDIs are much more responsive with the fast IBM storage attached. With the low latency, the users are experiencing much less lag while working in their Windows VDIs hosted on the XenServers. There's also less graphic fragmentation that occurs since moving to the IBM Storage FlashSystem.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use IBM FlashSystem as our Primary Data Storage, Backup Storage, and VDI Storage. We started with VDI Storage and the performance has been incredible, not only from the latency of the FlashCore Modules but also how the boxes are able to scale and interconnect. Once we saw the success with our VDI we implemented for Backup and then finally our Primary storage. With our Primary Storage setting up DR was very straight forward. Additionally, the safeguarded snapshots are a great way to have immutability and reduce RPO. The units are also available in multiple configurations so you can adjust based on your cost, scale and performance requirements.

Pros

Low Latency high performance storage.
Scalable storage that is easy to configure
DR Setup and Secure Snapshots
FlashSystem Grid, You can move volumes between different hardware based on needs.

Cons

I think the biggest area of improvement would be UI, once you use them you get used to them, but there can be certain functions that aren't as straight forward as they could be.
Firmware updates, Fix Central is great but is unnecessarily cumbersome, I would prefer the ability to easily update the firmware via IBM insights or for the unit itself.
Insights pro should be included with all systems.
I would like to see other options for maintenance/warranty and ability to bundle systems.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you need highly performant storage, this is as good as it gets. There is a bit of fanagling required if you are using copper, a lot of this is geared towards fiber channel. They are making more features available for ethernet use cases but sometimes it is a little less straightforward. Setting up replication, DR, FlashSystem Grid, etc is pretty straightforward and adapting the units into an existing environment is a lot less painful than previous storage we have used.

We use IBM Storage FlashSystem arrays for our production, development, and QA SAP environments. The flash arrays deliver great performance with low latency. This allows for the smooth running of I/O intensive databases. We manage around 200TB of block data between our multiple locations spread across US, UK & Europe. The deduplication feature improves storage efficiency and reduces space requirements. Furthermore, replication technologies make database refreshes easier, reducing the requirement for the time-consuming RMAN procedure. With these capabilities, we can sustain peak performance, streamline operations, and improve data management without disruption, resulting in an efficient and highly dependable storage infrastructure for demanding applications.

The IBM Storage FlashSystem are highly suited for high IOPs intensive databases, SAP applications and virtualization related workload. The high performance and efficient deduplication allows us to run more workload and store more data than the actual capacity without having the fear to run into some issue. Storing similar type of data allows for higher compression. On the other hand, i wont recommend using the flash array for workloads which are not IO intensive and can be run on low end systems.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use IBM Storage FlashSystem 9500 for our mission critical ERP SAP Landscape. It addresses the main issue of latency as it sustains sub-millisecond response times for our massive OLTP/OLAP Oracle Database which has grown over the years to +-40TB. The main feature we use and love is the Advanced Copy Services made possible by a very smart new feature called Policy-Based Replication. With this we clone our Production data every 2 weeks(planned) and on-demand with no performance degradation on Live Hosts. It's very intuitive and simple to use GUI helps us achieve our objectives instantly as the learning curve is very minimal. The powerful CLI helps us automate with shell scripts and/or Ansible which make Operational efficiency a breeze as we now have our SAP developers and Basis doing their own refreshes at the click of a button. Finally the system is so robust and highly available, very fault tolerant and even when a bug is detected it is self-healing and off course fixes and patching has never let us down as it deploys seamlessly.

Upgrades/Updates are deployed to the system without loss of data or services.

When connected to the internet via Storage Insights and Cloud Call Home it makes for proactive problem alerting, monitoring and resolution.
The fact that Replication and snapshot stuff are hidden under the covers and we no longer have to create mirror pairs or flashcopy pairs ourselves. It does it within the cluster or partnership.

Cons

Definitely we need to be able to extend a volume that is part of a mirror pair or Policy-Based Replication(PBO) on the fly.
Expansion of mirrored volumes/volume groups should resynchronise only the changed data (Almost like making use of change-volumes) and not trigger a full resync.
Please allow us to select downloading drive microcode also from Fix Central directly onto the flashsystem like with updates.

IBM Storage FlashSystem is an integrated part of our overall storage implementation used in more than one use cases. Not going into specific details, the overall aim of using IBM Storage FlashSystem along with other state-of- the-art technologies is creating the most secure possible and most reliable infrastructure to protect our customer data from any breaches proactive and recover them in all circumstances reactively.

Picking a specific technology including IBM Storage FlashSystem is based on its features to support this goal, integrate well with other technology, operate as automated as possible, acts proactively against potential breaches and connects to systems giving us a most transparent view of our overall status.

IBM Storage FlashSystem are primarily used as back end storage controllers for virtualized pools behind SAN Volume Controllers. These systems have substantially reduced footprint, power requirements and time to deploy. We have deployed IBM Storage FlashSystem to disaster recovery which has also minimized synchronous replication response times too host systems. All open system workloads have been migrated to IBM Storage FlashSystem.

Because of the high security required around our products as we offer services to a financial institution, IBM Power 8 and 9 were our best options. It also solved the problem of data loses during upgrades. P8 & P9 have in place checks to ensure upgrade is

Data protection is top notch
IBM FlashSystem will not allow upgrade to complete when any of it pre-checks fails. this is one great feature that has saved us
It also manages CPU and memory utilizations very well. The team receives report and notification when I/O is high

IBM Storage FlashSystem has a good recovery though recovery depends on data size. It has always been our organizations preference over the Dell Storage Systems that we have. It hot swap capability also affords the comfort to change any of the components (CPU,Memory) when need be. The system hardly goes down, been with the organization for 7 years and the only time Our FlashSystem went down was when someone mistakenly pull the power cable in the datacentre.
