IBM Maximo performs great when it comes to managing assets but it takes a bit of time and effort to learn

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We primarily use IBM Maximo for asset management and inventory control across our multiple departments, but it didn't start that way. We initially deployed it at one plant for maintenance scheduling, and within half a year, it had become a vital operation for us. We currently use it on a daily basis to track office assets and warehousing inventory, and to directly integrate with newly developed procurement workflows.

Pros

  • Greater visibility across our assets.
  • The preventive maintenance plan is very customizable.
  • The responsive support team fixed a critical issue within the software just a week after reporting it.

Cons

  • The interface is not friendly, and it took a lot of time for our team to get comfortable with it.
  • Sometimes updates can led to unexpected lag and downtime.
  • It has many useful modules and features, but it is not well known, and I only recently found it after I was actively searching for it.

Likelihood to Recommend

I would recommend Maximo to organizations with the patience and budget for long-term returns. It is not an easy platform to learn at first, but if you invest the time, it pays you back tenfold. It is not for people looking for a simple solution; this is a tool built for serious asset management.

About to turn it on

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are in the final stages of implementing IBM Maximo Application Suite to replace our existing system, including definition and management of assets, planning, scheduling and execution of work and capturing asset information in the field

Pros

  • Classification structure is useful
  • appears to be flexible in configuration
  • excellent searching and filtering capability

Cons

  • UI is inconsistent and unwieldy, particularly when selecting from a list
  • Inconsistent approaches to asset definition/creation (rotating items vs asset template) cause difficulties
  • Doesn't handle bulk updates to asset well - eg updating condition monitoring limits for the same group of assets should require asset by asset updates
  • Inspection capability is basic. Data structure in effect requires all information to be transposed to meters - which don;t support all response formats

Likelihood to Recommend

Inspections capability is basic
