Who Buys & Uses Hotjar

Hotjar sits above its competitors with an easy-to-use and robust feature set!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Hotjar is used with the purpose of collecting continual user feedback, which is important for any product to listen to the user's voice, especially to pain points. This capture of user sentiment over time, in recurring surveys or video recordings, is crucial for teammates who work in product, design, or engineering to make decisions on how to innovate their product for a better user experience.

Pros

  • Remove assumptions by providing in the moment, contextual insights.
  • Tracks user sentiment over time.
  • Ability to quickly and easily launch an intercept survey.
  • Link up hotjar recordings to a particular a/b experiment or event trigger for specific feedback.

Cons

  • Difficult to troubleshoot Hotjar issues since there is no line to call.
  • Limited plan tiers restrict the number of recordings available.
  • Multiple workspaces can be created for one website which can be redundant.

Most Important Features

  • Video recordings.
  • Intercept surveys, especially on mobile.
  • Summaries on rage clicking or other outliers.

Return on Investment

  • Difficulty in troubleshooting issues without a customer care line.
  • Over-reliance on hotjar recordings rather than soliciting dedicated research on a feature.
  • Time-consuming to parse through so many user videos.

Hotjar Review

Pros

  • There's a lot of filtering capabilities within session recordings, which allows you to be able to find videos/users who meet your needs.
  • It is an easy product to be able to use in terms of navigation/UI.
  • The support team always seems to be on hand to provide any assistance and support.

Cons

  • There should be capabilities to do numerous session recordings on different areas of the site at once.
  • Other tools I have used in the past (Decibel Insight) had the ability to automatically set up heatmaps on all of the pages - which would be good if it could be done on Hotjar.

Return on Investment

  • Helped to information from testing roadmaps. With the data, we were then able to improve conversion rates for clients.

Easy to use, Easy to Implement and captures invaluable data

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Hotjar at our organization to better understand user behavior on our website and we've also used it within our application too. It's great that we can see what the user see and what they are doing and where they are going so we can improve the usability/user journeys. If your looking to make your user's life easier/increase engagement then Hotjar is definitely a tool you should consider.

Pros

  • Heatmaps - see where your users mouse is pointing
  • Capturing feedback from the users
  • Being able to see what the user see's
  • Easy to implement

Cons

  • Customize the dashboard view - allow re-ordering of the widgets or hide widgets that aren't being used.
  • Sometimes when you navigate and you press the back button nothing happens and you need to use the nav on the page but then you have to make a few clicks to get back where you were.
  • Would be good to have integrations with ticketing platforms like JIRA, Github, and Bugherd in case you come across a bug you can easily raise a work ticket

Most Important Features

  • Heatmaps
  • Allowing us to see where the user is on the page (and what they see)
  • Capturing feedback

Return on Investment

  • Increased customer satisfaction - they like the improvements we've made
  • Increased sales leads
  • Massively improved the usability of our website based on reviewing the sessions that Hotjar has recorded.

Hotjar gave us insights we never had before

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Right now we use Hotjar for a handful of functions. If we need quick insights about a new feature we're building, we'll use the survey option to share our questions with our customers right from within the platform. We also use Hotjar's recordings to better understand what our users are doing and how they are interacting with our product. We've made significant discoveries from just doing that. We also use heatmaps as well, although probably not as effective as we should.

Pros

  • Heatmaps provide a really nice overview so you know where to dig deeper into your product.
  • Recording user sessions have been the most useful feature for us.
  • Surveys are a nice and easy way to gain insights from customers.

Cons

  • Although surveys are great for quick insights, they look and feel very much like a 3rd party application which I don't like. I wish there was a way to give it a similar look and feel as the rest of our platform to make it "blend" in a bit more.
  • This may just be us, but it's hard to do recordings from our homepage because our users go there to log in. The recordings pick up every interaction, including our own customers which is not helpful in that context. I'm sure there is a way to segment that but we've not been able to do it.

Most Important Features

  • Recordings
  • Heatmaps
  • Reviews

Return on Investment

  • Hotjar has helped us to innovate more quickly. What used to take us a week or so to send a survey through email and get responses, we can usually do in a day or so.
  • Recordings have been great in helping us to know what are the biggest problems ad tackling those first. I can truly say with out recordings, we would have tackled the wrong problems or, honestly, would never have known.

Easy and Essential User Behaviour Optimisation

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Hotjar to track user behaviour on our website in order to streamline the overall user journey on our site. Hotjar allows us to see what the user is doing and where they encounter any possible "roadblocks" in their interaction with our website. Based on the results, we can carry out optimisations to the content layout and call-to-action incentives where needed.

Pros

  • Heatmaps give us a visual representation of the user journey
  • Recordings allow us to re-trace the user journey, allowing us to see where any potential stumbling blocks occur
  • The live user feedback tool is a very cool option
  • The admin interface is clean and sleek

Cons

  • Direct integration with Google Analytics would be a cool option in order to correlate user behaviour to website traffic stats
  • An option to view the Get Started Guide again would be great
  • A mobile version of the dashboard would assist in viewing stats on the go

Most Important Features

  • Analysing user behaviour
  • Identifying a user's journey on your website
  • Being able to monitor individual pages

Return on Investment

  • We can increase conversions
  • A user's time-on-site is increasing
  • Bounce rates are reduced
