Factiva is a one-stop solution for business development. It keeps us up to date on the latest technology available in the market, allowing us to do more and discover a solution to implement in our business

Pros

  • Gives users data to target marketing campaign
  • More templates and tools to choose
  • Web Design and App Development features

Cons

  • The dashboard should be made more interactive
  • Not many cloud app for integration
  • The tool is some what manual. Needed more automation

Likelihood to Recommend

It fulfills the requirements for research. We do not need to read several publications to get the information. It also brings you up to speed on forthcoming events and news.

Fundamentals are excellent, but lacks some refined polish

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Factiva is being used by our Insight and Research departments as a content sourcing tool to fulfil client briefs and as a research tool to help us with our own marketing efforts, such as thought leadership pieces, sector reviews or to provide source material for opinion pieces. In these instances it helps address both an immediate client need but also acts as a very useful resource for answering ad-hoc requirements in house.

Pros

  • Factiva has some quality news sources within its database. You know it's a robust, reliable and trustworthy source of content.
  • The Boolean logic search engine can seem a little daunting at first, but it is a very powerful tool to help you get the most out of running searches. The syntax and query structure generally follows the same as most 'keyword search' engines, but it has some quirks that you need to be aware of - operators in lower case, or running multi word / phrase searches outside of quote marks.
  • The filtering capability is simplistic but highly sophisticated. Filter content by source, region, language, company, industry and subject matter to really help hone results. The amount of back data readily available in the tool is impressive too meaning that running historical searches over large a timeframe is quick and easy.
  • Results shown include a highlighted section to indicate where keywords have matched - a nice addition to help you quickly identify the relevant bits of content you need.
  • You have the option to further tailor searches, and the ability to save individual searches for quick recall is a nice feature.
  • The tool is fast. It can handle complex searches and mine data going back years very very quickly. Most impressive

Cons

  • While the source list available is strong, there is limited if next to no social media in the tool. OK, it's Factiva, we know it doesn't do social media, but if it ran social media searches in the same way it handled news searches this would be a formidable tool for anyone to use.
  • Export functionality is good but a little restrictive. While the tool exports a multitude of formats (headlines only, headlines and full text etc) the number of records you can export in one hit is relatively small if your initial search returns 1,000s of items. This is a shame given how powerful the tool is in running queries and building a deck of results.

Likelihood to Recommend

A large part of our work depends on the ability to source quality media content from a breadth of dependable sources globally. This is Factiva's bread and butter: it has a very comprehensive list of 'quality' media sources such as nationals, dailies, business journals and magazines from around the world that are easily mined for the content they hold. If you're thinking about anything other than these 'traditional' media sources then Factiva probably isn't your thing. It doesn't do social media.

Excellent one-stop shop for credible news articles!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

This is used primarily by expert testifiers who have experience with securities litigations. It is used frequently to help us understand what news events regarding a specific topic or company were known by the market and when they were known. Since Factiva combines a number of news contributors, this greatly reduces the amount of time spent trying to understand what information was in the market and when it was known by investors.

Pros

  • Factiva offers excellent search builders so that I am able to narrow my search to specific companies or topics very easily.
  • Factiva combines a large number of credible sources into one place and allows me to search all of these sources.
  • Factiva's use of timestamps helps me understand when the news was known by the market which allows me to analyze how (if at all) that particular piece of news impacted the company's stock price.
  • Provides an excellent starting place for learning about a company and/or industry.

Cons

  • While timestamps are available on some news events, it is not available on all. For my purposes, timestamps are crucial and if they're not available on Factiva, we often have to search out the internet to see if this information is available elsewhere.
  • Sometimes when narrowing news by the "Company" search function, Factiva can remove news that is still relevant to the company.
  • Often times we may work for an international company so it becomes crucial to not only review English articles, but also foreign articles as well. It would be nice to have the ability to automatically translate (even if it is a rough translation) these non-English articles for ease of use.

Likelihood to Recommend

Factiva is particularly useful when I work on securities litigations involving shareholder lawsuits -- i.e. shareholders who bought and sold shares during a specified class period when the company was misrepresenting, for example, its financials. Specifically Factiva is quite useful in helping me understand what company events were known by the market and when they were known. Factiva has also been useful in helping me on various research studies. It is less relevant for other types of litigation that I work on (i.e. Patent litigation, etc).

Great for business news

Rating: 7 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

At Law360, a NexisLexis-owned legal news wire, we used Factiva to keep on top of news in various industries or for specific companies we were following—often, I'd check the alerts we had set up every hour or so to determine whether there was anything that we had missed in our searches of PACER and other news organizations. Overall, it acted as a failsafe and news source.

Pros

  • Putting broad swaths of news in one place
  • Organizing information
  • Constant updates

Cons

  • The UX leaves room to be desired
  • There are often repetitive entries
  • The functionality can be confusing

Likelihood to Recommend

It seems well suited for gathering and analyzing business news and business information. That said, it leaves room to be desired in terms of any social media functionality or capturing emerging news sources. I don't recall Factiva picking up more specialized blogs or relatively recent entrants in to the news media world.

What the Factiva?

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It was used throughout the organization - both analysts and executives used it to conduct research on medical device companies, focusing on those companies headquartered in Eastern Asia, as well as the largest companies in the U.S. Moreover, we conducted research specifically on the competitor businesses to our client companies, to keep them abreast of developments and trends within the industry.

Pros

  • Strong overall search capabilities
  • Intuitive basis by which to refine a search
  • Frequently updated

Cons

  • Lengthy setup for searches
  • Repeated articles appear frequently
  • Unannounced interface changes were unpleasant surprises

Likelihood to Recommend

Where one's work is particularly dependent on researching news articles and developing/contemporary trends, Factiva is best suited, over say, another search engine like LexisNexis.
