Review of Equatio by a Middle School Private School Math Teacher

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I am the only person in my organization who uses it to my knowledge. I use it to create Google Forms with math equations to assess my students' learning. Without it, writing math equations would be much more difficult because I would have to search or create a picture of one.

Pros

  • Embedding math equations into Google Forms.
  • Easy to understand where all the symbols are.
  • Easy to read the final equation.

Cons

  • I would like to try voice typing of math equations.
  • I would like to type math equations in multiple colors.
  • I want to be sent an infographic in my email detailing all the ways I should use Equation, but I don't yet know about it.

Likelihood to Recommend

I recommend using Equatio when writing a computer-based test for middle schoolers and needing to include custom math equations in a Google Form as questions and answer options.

I tried to use Equatio forcreating worksheets, but it is frustrating. I can't change the font and I am basically inputting a picture. I tried having my students install and use equation, but i tis difficult to teach them how to use the equation editor. Not worth my time away from instruction.

  • I want to change the font
  • I want to change the size
  • I want more editing rights
  • I don't want a graphic inported into my document. I want something I can click and edit
  • I don't want to pay for it

I don't like it being web based and that I am tied to the internet. I want something that works nicely with office as well as other web based things

I am a trainer, so I use Equation when I'm demonstrating how to use it to both staff and students. Depending on the audience, I will focus on either the science or math aspects. I always start with the basics of entering data/equations, then move on to the mobile capabilities and the math space area.

Pros

  • Predicting formulas.
  • Providing options like speech-to-text.
  • Having a whiteboard area.

Cons

  • More science formulas.
  • Being able to provide notation for Propane, Butane, etc.
  • Creating different profiles for science or math.

Likelihood to Recommend

Equatio seems best suited for math above grade 7. It seems easier for high school students to use for science.

Equatio allows me to create visuals to go along math the math I’m doing in a very easy way. I love the ai feature and it has helped me teach fractions in a variety of ways. I’ve used it for basic fraction review, complaint fraction, fraction equivalents and adding and subtracting fractions.

Likelihood to Recommend

I would highly recommend Equatio to any and all math teacher in my school or throughout the district. I have Shared it with several of my colleagues who way to wet during the summer to do a deeper dive with me.

I am a Math teacher, therefore I use Equatio when making my lesson plans. I also have started implementing student use. Students this past few weeks were able to download Equatio on their chromebooks and use it to add math questions to their math digital games.

Pros

  • Edit tool. I am able to add formulas to my google slides very easily.
  • I am able to use Mathspace to create for example math manipulatives.
  • I am able to have a graphing (desmos) tool easily accesible for when working with systems of linear equations.

Cons

  • On the desmos part of Equatio once I have an equation typed when I zoom in to the linear function I wish there were ways where the viewing range could be adjusted.
  • Implementing math and writing is not as easy. Sometimes modifying or combining these two tools is difficult using Equatio.
  • There is a very limited functionality when it comes to the output equations . I could type for example, x+4 and only be able to make it regular, small, medium or large. Sometimes I need more options.

Likelihood to Recommend

In the past I have recommended Equatio to my math collegue becuase he also makes slides and presentation for his students. Using Equatio makes it easier for me to modify math equations without having to leave google.

We are an assistive technology lending library. We offer Equatio as an option to complete math electronically. This is particularly useful for students with physical disabilities or poor fine motor skills. We use Equatio as a digital option to make math more accessible. We also include the extension in many professional developments that we offer.

Pros

  • Digital manipulatives.
  • Voice typing the math.
  • Reading math problems correctly.

Cons

  • There are many options available so that it can be overwhelming. A tiered level based on grades would be helpful. i.e., K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9+.
  • The reading tool be more prominent.

Likelihood to Recommend

If I have a student doing higher-level math, Equatio would be my recommended tool for digital access. However, it has too many options and would be confusing for younger students. Kami, Google Docs, or Kiwi Write math would be better for those students. It is also very pricey, so we would choose a cheaper tool to do the job.

It supports our learners in class by offering scaffolding and tools to enhance learning. Children are able to access a range of tools for support or extension. It develops and fosters independence where the children make decisions about their own learning and how to move it forward. The tools support the role of teacher.

  • Handwriting recognition is good but sometimes slow

Likelihood to Recommend

It is suitable for learners that are completing their maths tasks online. It means they can effortlessly use mathematical symbols with accuracy. It means that the work is presented effectively. It is not so useful for jottings and working out as it tries too predict too much when the child is not finished.

We have a district of 10,000 students with a domain license. Students who have physical, cognition, visual, and executive functioning needs are all students who need to use this product; however, we are training and implementing the use of Equatio from a universal lens so that all students use it.

  • Visual supports imbedded for physical manipulation access

Cons

  • Additional templates for higher level math in math space
  • Examples that teachers can use and see how they can address access needs within Equatio.

Likelihood to Recommend

We have multiple students who need to speak math and have limited fine motor abilities to complete math independently. Given the ability to speak math and have it transcribed to text allows these students to independently complete tasks, that would otherwise require an adult sitting next to them.

Equatio is used to support all students and staff with making math accessible digitally.

Pros

  • It has a separate Mathspace workplace for doing problem solving tasks.
  • It integrates with Read&Write 4GC tools to allow for literacy support along with numeracy support.
  • It works well with Google forms, Docs, and PDFs in Orbitnote
  • The AI quiz generator is a great time saver!

Cons

  • Making the interface a little simpler for students so that they know which tool to choose.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is well suited in the upper junior, intermediate and senior school levels. The digital tools in math space are the only appropriate tools for primary students.

Equatio- Digital Math and Science Character Input Made Easy

With our students using Chromebooks, it was very difficult for them to be able to digitally input math and science characters. Equatio provides a simple interface where they have multiple options on how to input- written on device, written on mobile device, autofill, typing, etc. Once the interface loads, it is very intuitive. As well, it works with Google Forms which made it a lot more feasible for our math and science departments do to online quizzes. This became a key extension during the pandemic and has continued to be used since our return.

Likelihood to Recommend

This is a must have extension for any paperless environment for math and science. The ability to input math and science characters without having to use latex has made digital math input a viable option for our younger students. It does require some initial training but the students did pick it up very quickly.
