Epic: A Review by a Finance Director

Pros

  • One centralized location for medical records review, retrieval, additions/updates, etc.
  • User-friendly application.
  • Well know in the field, therefore training is easier than with a foreign (unknown) system.

Cons

  • Enhancements should be able to be implemented quickly and at minimal cost.
  • System uptime can always be improved. Downtown for system enhancements can be problematic.

Return on Investment

  • I am not up to speed on the ROI for the product.
  • The product is average in terms of what it provides our organization.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

At our ENT clinic, we use Epic EpicCare for our EMR. The EMR is integrated with the hospital and all of the affiliates. Makes intra-hospital and clinic notes easy to see and pull. Medical history and scope of patient problems are present. Like the easy integration of orders and medications. An extra benefit is integration on UpToDate. Med refills, nurses' notes, and patient messaging are all on one platform. Best platform for patient management. Simple to use smart phrases. Don’t like how some orders are difficult to place if you don’t know the right keywords to use. One of the best EMR systems compared to others. Able to use a mobile phone/tablet to add handwritten notes and pictures. Voice dictation is a plus.
