gathering company data, with a focus on financial data. unfortunately, D&B provides only the estimates which is not ideal. but the great thing about it is the coverage - D&B tends to be the last resort when I'm struggling to find the data or identify a legal name of the company i'm looking for. one of the most useful tools for me is the searching bar being able to identify the company just by pasting the company's website into the search bar. it really helps a lot and saves tons of time during research.

I utilize D&B Hoovers to conduct preliminary background research on potential clients of my organization. My first stop on D&B Hoovers is always to check the corporate family tree for any ownership or structure I was not previously aware of, and from there I can do further research when necessary. General revenue numbers and employee counts are also helpful, plus any relevant current news or articles written on the company.

Any preliminary company research is perfect for D&B Hoovers, whether in a client-focused, market research, or academic setting. It's a one-stop search that exceeds a simple web search or other networking site. I wouldn't recommend it for a more thorough search or understanding of a company's current financial situation or financial history.

I am a research analyst for a labor organization. I generally use D&B Hoovers to gather information on a private company's high level aggerate sales figures, related industry news, and prescreen score. The prescreen score is very useful as it helps us determine the stability of a company prior to attempting to organize them. The closest industry peers is also very helpful to determine similar organizing targets.

Likelihood to Recommend

A common example that I refer to which fits both categories would be employee counts. When OSHA 300 logs are unavailable for a particular manufacturing or related facility, D&B Hoovers employee count is a great source. When OSHA logs are available, I tend to use them instead as D&B Hoovers is not as accurate or pulling that information for a credible source in my opinion.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our GTM operations and data teams are the primary users of D&B Hoovers. We use the tool to expand our set of ICP accounts by finding net new accounts to add to our CRM. We also use D&B Hoovers to help fill out missing information on these accounts.

We also use D&B Hoovers to help find net new contacts for our marketing and seller teams. We want to find the best buying contact for each account.

Pros

It does a great job helping us look up data for a specific DUNS number
It helps us build lists to target new contacts by DUNS numbers
We can also build lists to help us find net new accounts.

Cons

It does not show inactive or out of business DUNS numbers. This makes it hard to do research using the tool
The list upload process is limited and does not work well for large lists.
The list building UI could be better streamlined for faster work.

Likelihood to Recommend

If they are looking up hierarchy information or conducting company research, I would recommend using it. This would be the same for net new accounts or contacts.

If they were conducting in-depth research, I would suggest they consider using a different tool. The limited ability to review out-of-business companies and data makes the tool limited in that type of research.

We look to locate contact information for senior executives at companies, as well as find out which companies are the leads in different kinds of industries. The website is also good for locating the headquarters for each business and providing a sense of the companies' revenue and related subsidiaries if applicable.

One of the challenges we have had with D&B Hoovers is that it does not integrate with all of the software and systems that we use. I think there is a huge opportunity to create some integration with these platforms. I also think the usage of AI to some capacity is an opportunity for D&B Hoovers to create more value for its customers.

An example of when D&B Hoovers was well suited for our organization was when we could not get a prospect to return our calls regardless of how many times we called or left voicemails. We did some research on D&B Hoovers and found a contact and their email. I sent them an email and actually got a response from them expressing interest in our services. It ended up turning into a very lucrative contract for us.

D&B Hoovers is great for carrying out prospecting research for point of contact for various businesses and industries. It also includes great information regarding different industries. From my experience, contact information in D&B Hoovers was the most up-to-date information found across all prospecting research tools. Certain tools within the platform that allows for more precise targeting are add-ons that come with additional subscription costs. That can be a downside as the cost increases quickly with additional add-ons.
