Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Currently, my company implemented TeamForge across all of it's IT, for use in monitoring codebases, as well as integration/tracking changes. We use this implementation for restricting access as native GIT does not supply such limitations. And in small ways, we use this for tracking with Agile projects, tying into Version One.

Pros

  • Code security.
  • Code migration.
  • Agile tie-in.

Cons

  • Backing out of changes could be better with their interface.
  • Determining what user groups are assigned to what repositories can be challenging with my companies current implementation of TeamForge.
  • Sometimes we have to get work around for TeamForge to interface with other Agile tracking options. TeamForge has its own tracking method and is not designed to hook up to third parties. They'd rather you use their product.

Likelihood to Recommend

As long as you are looking for a tool that segregates who can do what with a given repository and branch in GIT, and do not mind strictly using TeamForge's Agile tracking software that comes native to the application, this is the tool for you. The tool is fairly user-friendly, and they have an excellent support staff. You're really buying that support, more than anything else. If however, your company insists on using separated agile tracking software such as Version One, I would not recommend TeamForge. They prefer an all or nothing kind of deal.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

CollabNet TeamForge is used by our technology department mainly to track new projects and status of current projects, to document enhancements and bug fixes for future projects and to monitor a team or a developer's progress.

CollabNet TeamForge is a reliable source for business managers and analysts to find out the status of a project including which projects are in flight, what resources are used and when a project will be completed.

Pros

  • CollabNet TeamForge has a simple user interface making entering artifacts fast and painless. This allows the developer to quickly start working on a project and spend less time on administrative tasks.
  • CollabNet TeamForge has quick and easy to use search and reporting capabilities. This saves user time when looking for projects and finding out the status of a project.
  • CollabNet TeamForge has intuitive menu design and layout with efficient hyperlink based navigation. This provides users the ability to multitask effectively working on multiple projects with minimal interruption.
  • CollabNet TeamForge Subversion is a powerful change management tool that's very easy to learn and use. It offers developers both command line and user interface functions and features.

Cons

  • I would like to see personalization for managing artifacts, that is, allowing the user to customize pages and save personalized settings and then save them as bookmarks.
  • I would like an improved subversion browser such as a graphical user interface rather than a basic file explorer.
  • I would like built in features for CollabNet TeamForge integrated with subversion so that i can associate my private code branches and code changes.

Likelihood to Recommend

CollabNet TeamForge is more well-suited for technically knowledgeable users such as developers, systems analysts, QA but not for non-technical users due to the technical data used throughout the tool. CollabNet TeamForge is appropriate for most applications development. In any industry especially suited for high demand software delivery environments.
