Cisco Umbrella is primarily used by organizations to bolster cybersecurity, specifically by preventing access to malicious web content such as mal-domains, command and control servers, and phishing attempts. In TrustRadius reviews, it is widely deployed to secure internet traffic for the entire organization and implement security policies, including for remote and mobile workforces through "always on" web filtering. Reviewers frequently highlight its ease of setup and use, alongside its effective DNS security and malware protection capabilities, which analyze and block malicious DNS requests.

The product also offers strong integration with existing IT infrastructure and provides valuable reporting features for internet activity visibility. However, some reviewers note challenges with policy management granularity, finding it insufficient for highly specific rules, and report occasional inconsistencies in domain categorization. While strict controls can sometimes impact end-user experience, the solution generally delivers a positive ROI through significant cost savings from automated threat prevention and reduced operational expenditures.

What were the main organizational challenges you faced as you planned or implemented hybrid work? If you did not use Cisco to support hybrid work, please skip this question.

From 11 reviews | Last Published May 26, 2026

As organizations adapted to hybrid work models, a significant challenge identified by 3 of 11 reviewers centered on ensuring robust network security for distributed workforces. The primary concern involved extending existing network protections to remote environments, which necessitated solutions like antivirus software that did not rely on local servers and effective DNS threat filtering. Reviewers emphasized the critical importance of security in all aspects of hybrid work, noting the constant need to balance user experience and ease of use with stringent security measures. This balance was frequently described as difficult to achieve, yet essential for maintaining organizational integrity. A key operational hurdle involved securely and efficiently integrating remote users into the interconnected network, highlighting the complexity of managing access and data integrity across varied locations.

Network Security

Extending our network protections to our remote workers, was the goal. We needed an Antivirus that did not need a local server, and DNS threat filtering.

Please provide some detailed examples of areas where Cisco Umbrella has room for improvement.

From 11 reviews | Last Published May 26, 2026

Reviewers identified several areas where Cisco Umbrella could be enhanced, primarily focusing on policy management complexity, filtering accuracy, and integration capabilities. A notable concern, raised by 3 of 11 reviewers, is the current granularity of rule management, which some found insufficient for creating highly specific rules for individual machines, thus limiting the ability to build intricate rule sets. This is closely related to challenges in policy configuration and deployment, with 3 of 11 reviewers indicating that understanding the correct order of policies and making advanced configurations can be difficult. Reviewers expressed a desire for easier deployment and greater automation in user policy management. Furthermore, the filtering and blocking features received mixed feedback from 3 of 11 reviewers, who reported inconsistencies in domain categorization, where legitimate sites were occasionally flagged as malicious and vice versa. These reviewers also suggested expanding content filtering and providing more detailed information on blocked sites. Integration with other products, both within the Cisco ecosystem and with third-party solutions, was another area for improvement, cited by 2 of 11 reviewers, who noted a lack of harmonization between Cisco's own offerings. Finally, the user interface and experience, specifically regarding filtering options, were identified by 2 of 11 reviewers as needing enhancement, with a call for the ability to combine multiple parameters for more refined data analysis.

Rule Management Granularity

So hundreds of specific rules for specific machines and the rule management in Cisco Umbrella is not that granular. So it was not possible to build up these rule sets in Cisco Umbrella, but now we see to access it's much better already.

Policy Configuration and Deployment

It takes a while to get the order of policies figured out.

Filtering and Blocking Features

Sometimes Cisco Umbrella mark well known and good domain as malicious whether sometimes they mark malicious sites/domain as low risk. So, it's something that they should focus on, I think.
