Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We deployed a few Cisco 1000 Series Aggregation Services Routers across multiple data centers and office as high-performance edge and WAN aggregation routers. They serve as critical components for our services which we provide to our customers. We run full BGP feed from IP-Transits with RPKI, ROA and also connects to multiple IXs. We also run ACLs for secure and compliant edge routing.

  • Unified OS using IOS-XR just like ASR9K

ASR 1000 are used as network Route reflectors in key places in the network and as PE for client aggregation where it is not justified to install bigger routers like ASR 9k or Nexus 8k.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it in our Business partner network zone, we connect multiple customer own circuits here, it is great for port density and private cloud environment where multi tenancy is required, the device is VRF aware and supports a variety of routing protocols (Open standard), which allow us to peer with the providers or customers. This device is ideal for WAN, it has multiple models, but it surely performs properly.

  • VRF Aware > allow us to segment each circuit per VRF instance.
  • Port density depending on the model and customer needs.
  • Easy to troubleshoot and configure.
  • Support for sub-interfaces using VLAN tagging which allows to separate traffic at the logical level.

  • Support for open standard LACP protocol and Cisco own PAGP protocol.
  • Route leak supported between VRFs.
  • Redundant PDUs.
  • Support for open standard AAA.

  • Take captures similarly to an ASA, it may get a little complicated to get the info needed.
  • A packet tracer feature that simulates how traffic will route across the router,
  • Better logging when traffic is getting dropped.

  • We dont have invest in multiple routers(more than 30) to have 1 circuit per customer, this allowed us to build multiple environments and save money more than 30-50K in savings alone in this portion.
  • Licensing is done per set of features, this impacts in great way, given that we only need a couple of routers and a couple of licenses.
  • Device throughput support is really high, this allow us to honor customer circuit speed.

Cisco 1000 Series ASR - Router Reliability

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have several ASR routers currently in our organization. We are using these routers not only as our internet routers, but also as our WAN routers in several of our branch offices. We rely heavily on these routers to perform well for our organization.

Pros

  • These routers are very good at performing 24x7! This is key to running an organization where employees are working 24x7.
  • The ZBFW feature works especially well to help lockdown and protect your network.
  • Having the ability to perform in-service upgrades is a key feature in keeping your network up at all times.

Cons

  • One room for improvement on these routers would be better QA testing on the software before it's released. We have had several IOS images that have had major bugs in them.

Most Important Features

  • The ZBFW (zone based firewall)
  • The 10 GB SFP ports
  • The ability to perform in-service upgrades

Return on Investment

  • We have been able to get a lot of life out of these routers, which is huge for our ROI.
  • A negative business impact would be when upgrading the router software and running into a bug in the software that causes downtime for our environment.
