What is Azure Arc?

Azure Arc is a set of technologies that brings Azure security and cloud-native services to hybrid and multicloud environments. It enables the user to secure and govern infrastructure and apps anywhere, build cloud-native apps faster with familiar tools and services to run them on any Kubernetes platform, and modernize the data estate with Azure data and machine-learning services.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In my organization, we use Azure Arc to manage our multi cloud environment. We use Microsoft Azure as the main Cloud provider, and also use AWS as the secondary cloud provider. All these environments has multiple virtual machines. We also has on premise servers that are onboarded to Azure Arc. Through Azure Arc, we get centralized visibility, patch management, security & compliance covered.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have been seeking for a unified monitoring solution for both our on-premise servers, both Windows server and Linux, as well as all our Cloud Azure-based servers. Azure Arc has been able to provide a single pane of monitoring solution for all our hybrid cloud infrastructure components in an efficient manner.

Cons

  • Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS operating system version support is limited and reaching end of life soon
  • Azure Arc-enabled data services for Postgresql and SQL Managed Instance have some limitations, we would like to see them becoming more stable with a broader feature set.
  • While configuring the Azure Connected Machine agent on some Linux machines, we had to carry out troubleshooting to get them to work, we would like to see the agents for Linux even more stable in future releases.
