AWS Certificate Manager free and easy to integrate SSL certificates

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use AWS Certificate Manager extensively both with private certificates uploaded to it and with ACM generated ones.
It allows us to have end to end encryption between EC2 servers and Load Balancers and CDN.

Pros

  • easy to generate ssl certificates
  • free ssl certificates
  • ability to import private ssl certificates
  • integrates well with other AWS services

Cons

  • would be great to be allowed to download certificates generated by ACM

Likelihood to Recommend

Ability to upload our clients' private ssl certificates to then be used across other AWS services.
Great to integrate with Route53 and be able to generate internal SSL certificates to be used across other services.

AWS Certificate manager (ACM) : SSL certificate management

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We're using AWS Certificate Manager to Issue, renew and manage SSL Certificates in AWS Cloud. It was difficult for us to use SSL Certificates issues by third-party vendors and implement SSL on AWS Services. AWS Certificate Manager made it easier using it we can easily implement SSL on all other AWS Services such as EC2, ELB, CloudFront, Lambda, etc.

Pros

  • Issue, Renew and Validate SSL Certificates.
  • Allows us to integrate it with other AWS Services.

Cons

  • It doesn't support automatic domain verification with other domain name services.
  • Limited to AWS only, Certificates issued by ACM can be used with AWS managed services only.
  • If you are having multi-region infrastructure then you'll need to issue an SSL certificate for a domain in each region.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you're using AWS extensively and your workloads are deployed on top of managed AWS services and you require SSL implementation then it's highly recommended to use it and also it's free of cost AWS doesn't charge a penny for AWS Certificate Manager. Limited to AWS only, Certificates issued by ACM can be used with AWS managed services only you can't use certificates outside AWS this is the only drawback.

A simple solution for the AWS Cloud

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use AWS Certificate Manager across the whole organization to create and manage all the certificates needed to secure connections to other AWS services such as ALB, API Gateway, and CloudFront. The main business problem it solves is the high integration and easy of use within AWS, even to import external keys and certificates and manage them from there.

Pros

  • Ease of use
  • Great integration with other AWS services
  • Public certificates are free

Cons

  • It would be great if it integrated with other domain name services from domain validation
  • EC2 and other compute services integration with custom domain

Likelihood to Recommend

I would always recommend AWS Certificate Manager for anyone using AWS cloud services. The perfect scenario would be with your domain managed by AWS Route 53 as you can obtain auto renewal of certificates with really good security for all your public facing application that uses CloudFront, ALB or API Gateway.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using it at the department level, and mainly we use it to manage SSL certificates for our websites. We found it very useful, especially when we need to renew certificates, because the functionality is really straightforward. The interface is clear and not excessively complex, so we didn't find any problems using it.

Pros

  • Easy to use interface
  • Really straight forward functionality
  • Simple and effective

Cons

  • Sometimes ACM certificates don't work with ELB.
  • No automatic alert on certificate expiration.

Likelihood to Recommend

AWS Certificate Manager is far better than the old IAM certificate manager. It's simple to use, effective and it actually does what it says it will do. Of course, it could be better, but it's perfect for the job as is right now. The private CA is a nice addition, that in some scenarios would be useful.

Reduces the time in setting up a secure website

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use AWS Certificate Manager in our team to set up secure https website to our product pages. Using Certificate Manager we get the SSL certificates and manage them in a better and simpler manner. We have not tried any other approach to get an SSL certificate.

Pros

  • AWS has everything that we need to set up an enterprise application and website.
  • The domain name validation has two types, email based and DNS approach.
  • The certificate can be used in AWS ELB and archive the secure HTTPS website.
  • Setup is really simple, hardly involves 3-4 steps.

Cons

  • Domain name validation is time consuming, and requires manual effort.
  • Domain name validation could be avoided if the domain provider is AWS, they can validate it internally.

Likelihood to Recommend

AWS Certificate Manager works with any domain, even non-AWS provided domains. It is an easy and fast way of setting up your secure application website. If you follow the steps properly, like the validation steps wherein you have to add a rout53 entry manually in order to get your domain validated, it will not take much time to get your certificate.
