Vimeo and Wistia are both video hosting platforms for business. Though Wistia markets itself as video marketing software and Vimeo markets itself as a generalist video platform, both fulfill similar business needs.

Wistia includes powerful analytics and marketing tools that make it ideal for companies aiming to launch intensive video marketing campaigns. In contrast, Vimeo offers more storage and a slick user-friendly interface.

    Features

Vimeo and Wistia both offer basic video hosting features, including video analytics, in-player CTAs, and custom branded video players, but there are a few key features that set them apart.

Vimeo offers a large amount of storage with each of their plans, though they also have a weekly limit on how much data can be uploaded. Additionally, Vimeo provides access to unlimited playlists and subscribers for their users. Lastly, Vimeo has integrations for popular marketing and email services that are available at most pricing tiers.

Wistia offers powerful marketing tools to support video marketing campaigns. Analytics tools like A/B testing and video metadata embedding make Wistia great at getting videos in front of their target audience. Wistia also provides many support videos on their site and is known for responsive customer support for premium members.

    Limitations

Though Vimeo and Wistia both offer powerful features for business, they also have some limitations that are important to consider.

Vimeo lacks the robust analytics features offered by Wistia. A/B testing is not included, and the analytics captured by Vimeo aren’t as in-depth compared to Wistia. Vimeo also has limits on the number of users per account and how much video can be uploaded by users in a week. This can be an issue for organizations that create lengthy videos.

Wistia has limitations on the number of playlists and subscribers a user can have at most pricing tiers. Additionally, Wistia provides a set number of free video uploads each month, with subsequent uploads costing $0.25 each. This could be a problem for organizations that upload many small videos. Like Vimeo, Wistia also offers custom branding for video players, but the interface is more complex to use.

    Pricing

Both Vimeo and Wistia offer free versions for users that want to test out their features, but they are limited. Wistia’s free version only allows the upload of three videos. Vimeo’s free accounts can’t be used commercially.

Vimeo offers three tiers of pricing. Vimeo Pro costs $20.00 per month and provides access to 20GB of video upload per week and three users. The next tier, Vimeo Business costs $50.00 per month and provides integrations, ten users, and unlimited weekly uploads up to a total storage of 5TB. Lastly, Vimeo Premium costs $75.00 per month and includes unlimited live streaming and 7TB of total video storage.

Wistia has 2 pricing tiers. The Pro tier costs $90.00 per month and includes 10 free video uploads, 1 channel, and up to 250 subscribers. The Advanced tier is priced depending on the business and includes 100 free videos and unlimited subscribers. Any video uploaded beyond the free videos costs $0.25.

    Which Is Right For You?

Vimeo is often used by smaller companies that enjoy more affordable access to video storage, integrations, and video player customization. Businesses that are focused on video quality and who upload less video than Vimeos weekly limits will get the most out of Vimeo.

Wistia is preferred by larger companies that benefit from the variety of marketing tools and premium integrations that Wistia offers. Businesses that are focused on creating sophisticated marketing campaigns centered on video will find Wistia’s tool set most useful.

For an overall professional appearance of Vimeo, I think it looks fabulous for the clients we work with. I think it works extremely well to host videos for courses and training that can be paid training. The privacy feature is great for that. I've never used it for going LIVE and wonder if that might be a good option for businesses but since I haven't tried it, I'm not of the capabilities. And I'm not sure how the clients are able to get on the LIVES. It does have so many new features since I started 4 years ago, and that means that there is a higher learning curve if you want to make full use of this platform.

For companies that want to integrate their videos into actionable steps like behavioral follow up through a CRM, Wistia is the best tool to use. You can automate your systems to track when a video is viewed, engaged with or how long a person has been watching along with heatmaps to show where people were most interested and least interested so you can adjust your videos to optimize their performance.

    Pros
    Vimeo
    • User-friendly interface for administrators of the account and external viewers. Being able to easily navigate a new platform or software is ideal for anyone.
    • Seamless sharing and embedding across many platforms. Vimeo is well-recognized so it makes it easy for other platforms to recognize Vimeo. The compatibility is outstanding.
    • As an administrator of the account, being able to select viewing privileges may seem like a basic function, but it's so necessary right now with how heavy our organization is utilizing the platform. We can mass upload content early and only release it for the public over time by simply changing it to a public video.

    Cons
    Vimeo
    • Price - For the full featureset of Vimeo, you will be paying $900 a year as of 2020, and this is expected to only go up over time. Thankfully, Vimeo offers lower tiers with less functionality, and most people will not need the unlimited streaming viewers or whopping 7 TB of storage that you get for the highest level of membership. But it is still a premium price for a premium service.
    • "Suggested" Algorithm - The equivalent of YouTube's suggested videos feature is the Vimeo Staff Picks, which recommends curated content from their team of editors. While this content generally has a high level of production, it is not especially relevant to the video you are watching, or to your watch history as a user. I rarely watch suggested videos in Vimeo.
    • Search - The Vimeo search page is beautiful, having huge thumbnails of videos with a clean, visually-appealing layout. However, the results themselves leave much to be desired. When I search for "jung" to try to find videos on Swiss psychologist C. G. Jung, of the first 18 results, not a single result is actually about C. G. Jung. On Youtube, the first 14 results are all about Jung. When I search for "c. g. jung" on Vimeo I find a number of relevant results, so it's not that the videos are not available in Vimeo. Rather, the search algorithm is not returning relevant results.

The design is clean and intuitive for the most part, which allows for ease of use by both novice and experience users. We are grateful for the ways that the front-end video player is easy to navigate and intuitive to use, and the backend is generally designed the same way. • It allows clients to serve a massive amount of video content within an LMS without eating up disk space or sacrificing bandwidth.
    • The overall cost is very low compared to other tools and there is no 'pay per view' style unstable pricing.
