Depending on the environment being implemented in I'd recommend it for compliance purposes as well as managing it from a Network Engineer perspective. From my experience, firmware updates, patching and hardware integration have generally been smooth. Truth be told, cloud based firewall and networking compliance are becoming more and more mainstream and WildFire has a solid foundation.

For sure it is well suited for companies that need to keep track of their data and that are willing to pay for it. It does an excelent job of monitoring the file's access, with zero impact on Storage's performance. Sometimes it is not enough to be able to restore the data. Sometimes in critical incidents, managers and heads demand to know who caused it. Thanks to Varonis we were able to give them this information easily and in a short time.

Pros
  • Quick definition downloads and updates. Version 7.1 can do one every 5 minutes. Zero day protection within 5 minutes is a huge plus.
  • Quick manual or automatic examination of files. Palo Alto's wildfire site supports API uploads or manual uploads that provide more detailed information than a Virustotal, for example.

Cons
  • The main pain is that we have to purchase the WildFire Licence separately. I think it should be by default available in Palo Alto Firewall.
  • Sometimes it takes much time to analyse the file.
  • It provides result after attack is happened.

Usability
It is a great product that has definitely improved our security posture, however it does require quite a bit of training and time spent customizing for the environment. We had several difficulties in deployment but Palo Alto support was able to help us work through the problems that we were not able to figure out on our own.

I wish the cost was a little bit lower and increase functionality and features would give it 10/10.

Support Rating
PAN support is very good. You can get the reasonable and timely support on any conditions. When the product is already integrated with the PAN firewalls, you can choose the severity levels based on the effect. The customer service/TAC is very helpful, they even have additional recommendations of advises for product usability. Local partners are also assisting the cases and give their expertise.

Support has always been very responsive and addressed any issues we may have had in the past. Some local engineers are willing to come onsite or work over a web session to discuss creating a new rule set or look at some issues. Getting issues address has never been a problem. There was one feature we had trouble getting to function correctly, but support and local engineers were willing to work with us as much as needed to get it working correctly for our organization.

We tested Fortinet's products before settling on Palo Alto Networks WildFire. Most of our sites were already deployed with Palo Alto Firewalls, which made the decision easy, however we also based that on Palo Alto's superior ratings by other security firms. Fortinet also has a solid product portfolio but Palo Alto Networks WildFire turned out to be the best choice for our organization.

When it comes to data security we all want something stable with good protocol practices. Varonis is good at data analyzing, detecting threats, taking actions and compliance. Varonis needs lots of resources to run and it is somewhat expensive. But still I believe that Varonis does a good job among the other competitors

  • Varonis has only been a positive impact on our environment, but helping us close security holes that we didn't know existed.
  • This product has also provided piece of mind by watching our environment for Malware attacks and taking automatic actions if necessary.
  • This software does require a fair amount of server resources, but fortunately can be hosted in a virtual environment and has made this need easier to handle.
