User Testimonials

We reviewed many different vendors product offerings, we found the Fortinet FortiGate to best fit our needs. We upgraded from a previous firewall, the migration was a fairly easy process. We were also able to consolidate multiple firewalls into one unit using vdoms. It's been helpful to have one pain of glass, one support contract and easy to work with support. These firewalls are feature rich which is great, but the support contracts are expensive.

I think Palo Alto Panorama is suited for administrators of all levels because certain things can be locked down to certain permission levels. But there are executive dashboards all the way down to the weeds for the highest of administrators. This truly is a single pane of glass tool because you never have to go into the individual firewalls for anything.

Pros
  • It is the most reliable NGFW that we have ever been touch with it.
  • You can easily upgrade the firewall cluster firmware without user attention!!!
  • User IDentity based feature is fantastic and intrusion prevention just works with least false-positive possible.
  • Very reachfull and intuitive GUI, just love it

  • First, it has a very good signature-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that shows malicious inbound or outbound network packets. The classification for the critical threats is flawless.
  • It has a feature called "Wildfire" which act like an anti-virus and it reports any malware or malicious attachment that have been downloaded or sent through the network.

Cons
  • When we switched to Fortinet Fortigate, it took some time getting used to and become familiar with the new interface. Being used to strictly command-line interfaces, a full GUI-based firewall was something brand new. Careful planning had to be done when creating rules to ensure we didn't miss anything. However, once we got used to the new GUI interface, going from one Fortinet product to another was simple, as Fortinet used the same interface for all of its devices.

  • The dual WAN functionality doesn't exist in it.
  • Better coding in order to make the portal faster
  • Hard to apply the templates, too many steps
  • It is very slow applying changes once you have committed the changes on its web interface. It could take a nearly 30 seconds until the change has been actually applied on the device, needs some software enhancements. It sometimes crashes for unknown reasons due to bugs.

Panorama has given us much more than we expected and the support for the product, by Palo Alto Networks has been great. We would like to see some improvements that I mentioned in another review, like scheduling changes, but overall Panorama has provided a very capable product and we are very happy with it.

Usability
The user interface shared among many simultaneous users is very easy to get around. With shared favorites among users, most tasks are easily bookmarked and can quickly be found and edited. Their strategy for web filter integration is easy to understand and manage as well. With some general direction, setup and maintenance were easy to do and easy to teach others in the organization to do as well.

It is a solid product, it allows me to connect multiple devices and to manage my cloud, on prem and vmware firewalling devices. I can assign roles with the required visibility depending on the users. I can also consolidate all my logs into it to have a single pane of visibility.

Support Rating
We live in Turkey. Fortinet's Turkey office [dealt] constantly with us in our every problem or our experience. In addition, global support teams also supported every ticket we opened in every problem we encountered. They support innovative approaches and evaluate and offer solutions. In this context, they were very supportive of the problems we encountered in previous versions.

When you get help it is great. they have different service plans you need to know what plan you have and what kind of turn around you can expect. We have even had a local engineer to help us with questions and solutions. I feel the support team they have is very knowledgable and can help you out. Most of the time there is no need to escalate the issue.

Alternatives Considered
One of the biggest advantages over competitors that Fortinet FortiGate leverages well is its remote virtual private networks options. Licensing is included with Fortinet FortiGate units at no extra cost. We find that the telemetry is easier to compile and most importantly communicate with non technical members of staff. The Fortinet FortiGate unit is also extremely stable for long periods of time without showing signs of needing a reboot.

Palo Alto Panorama and Junos Space Security Director have many similar features but Palo Alto Panorama excels in almost all of them. The monitoring tools in Palo Alto Panorama are easy to use and give more in-depth insight into what is going on in your network. Palo Alto's security is ranked much higher and the Web Application Security is also superior to that of the Junos counterpart.

Scalability
My environments are pretty small (less than 100 users per location) so no issues here.

Return on Investment
  • SD-WAN : Can't stress it further that we are very happy with this functionality and outcomes in the org. We have multiple WAN and MPLS links and traffic switching becomes an important in order to utilize the best performing line.
  • QoS : We use QoS for almost all internet traffic, be it Web browsing by users, IOT segment, Application based traffic policy and VIP and normal user based bandwidth allocation.
  • SSL and IPSec VPN, both features are fully used to it absolute capacity. IPSec tunnels with multiple sister companies across globe.

  • Panorama seems expensive but when you compare it to other software it really isn't and the features make it worth every dollar.
  • Have panorama allow us to have entry-level team members help out even if they don't understand our whole network they can just go to panorama and know that find the info they need and what device the issue is happening on.
  • It has brought peace of mind to our security knowing that all policies can be managed through a central system and patches and updated can be centralized.
