Veeam Backup & Replication

Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We utilize Veeam to back up our on-premises environment as well as our Microsoft 35 footprint in Azure. Veeam allows us to have local and off-site copies of our data in geographically separate locations to follow Disaster Recovery best practices. With Veeam we are able to quickly restore entire environment or granular files on all protected machines and provide an acceptable recovery time objective and recovery point objective for our organization's specific needs.

  • Instant recovery allows for quick backup validation spot-checks

Cons

  • Better reporting capabilities to identify virtual machines that are not caught in any backup jobs
  • The web interface is not as user-friendly as the local console
  • Better integration with third-party services, either via API or webhooks, to assist in reporting when backup jobs fail and auto-create tickets in our ITSM system
  • Veeam has helped us to product specific emails and files from terminated employees for use in legal matters
  • Veeam has helped with rolling back large, unintended changes of specific areas in user-facing file servers
  • Veeam has helped with quick recoveries of virtual machines when OS-level files become corrupt and individual-level recovery is not viable
We selected Veeam as we did not need the large enterprise features that many of the other products provided. These features all came with a price tag to match and they were in excess of our requirements for a backup product. Veeam allowed us to gain the benefits of backup and recovery that we were after at a price which fit our budget and allowed us to continue to expand our workloads as needed while still ensuring their protection.

Veeam has been a great product overall and tends to be the market leader based on price-point. There are other products that automate more of the backup task chain, recovery actions, and reporting, however they also carry much larger price tags. Veeam's largest struggle is that it feels like a lot of separate products that have been programmed to mostly work together. This leaves the end user with multiple consoles where they have to administer different aspects from and feels unpolished compared to competitors.

Evaluating Veeam Data Platform and Competitors

Yes - Infrascale DR as a Service. The product did not protect all of our workloads and was extremely expensive in comparison to Veeam's offering. With Veeam we're able to protect all existing workloads and have overhead to expand our server footprint and still protect all workloads. We can also use Veeam's other product offerings to protect additional workloads such as our Microsoft 365 environment and Azure workloads.
